Migraines with Aura

Any migraine with aura sufferers out there?  How is it going during pregnancy?  I had a really scary one on Friday where my left side went numb and of course I lost my vision.  They are coming really frequently during this pregnancy.  Are you taking anything?

Re: Migraines with Aura

  • I had one last weekend.  I was throwing up too... it was really bad.  I slept then took some tylenol and drank a coke for the sugar and caffeine.  Mine are triggered by really bright lights/glare so I'm trying to avoid those.

  • I have gotten these sporadically since about age 13.  Terrifying.  After my DS was born, i was back in the ER for CT and MRI to make sure I hadn't had a stroke -- in addition to the symptoms you described above, I get confusion and I stop making sense.  It is terrifying.  Google "Hemiplegic migraine" as that is probably what you're having (more than just an aura).

I take Maxalt when not pregnant and not breastfeeding.  I had 2 in the first tri-mester with my last pregnancy, and 2 in the first tri with this pregnancy... hoping they are all done now.  Last time, I didn't' have any more until the night I came home from the hospital with my son, and the neurologist is pretty sure it was related to the nature of his birth (induction, labored 12 hours, pushed for 3, emergency c/s, epidural didn't take so I had to be put under general anesthesia + all the hormone fluctuations and sleep deprivation).

Hang in there.  Stay hydrated.  The headache part of my migraines is the least horrible part -- the side effects are terrifying.

  • I had a 4 day episode last week, it was awful. I have been taking extra strength Tylenol, but it does nothing for me. I've been having episodes about every three weeks or so, which is more frequent than I had pre-pregnancy. I plan on asking my doctor next week if there is something he can prescribe me to help since all the things I took OTC are no good for baby apparently.

  • I get them, but thankfully haven't had any this pregnancy. I think fiorcet is ok to take during pregnancy, speak with your OB.

  • @epaprn fiorcet is effective for pain relief, but like @JSS1002 said the pain is really the least horrible part of this kind of migraine.  However I'm a huge supporter of taking meds with a sedative in them, like fiorcet because I think the anxiety that happens when you have one of these horrific migraines doesn't help one bit.  When I'm not pregnant I pop a Xanax as soon as my eyes go blind with aura, and it helps me relax through the rest of the event.  Since being pregnant, I can't take Xanax and all I can do is just power through them :(

But let me say anyone that suffers from ANY kind of migraine - I feel so bad for you, this is miserable.  I hope 2nd tri is kinder to all of us!

I have found that chiropractic care and acupuncture have really helped with migraines. Also, when I get a migraine at the first realization that the aura is popping up, I take Tylenol, drink a bunch of water, then drink a coffee. That usually catches it for me before it gets bad. And have a nap if I can. Good luck getting them under control!

I haven't done accupuncture but recently wetn to see a chiro for the first time due to some neck pain and was very pleasantly surprised.  After 36 years of thinking they are quacks, I'm now a believer.  Worth a shot.

  • I get those types of migraines, but luckily have only gotten two since I've been pg. my OB told me Excedrin is safe to take while pregnant. That is the ONLY thing that works for me when it comes to migraines. I also have to agree with chiropractic care and acupuncture. Life savers!
  • I get them as well. I usually lose all vision for a while, comprehension of what people are saying and the ability to compose thoughts to respond, finally facial numbness and numbness in my arm and hand on the opposite size of where the headache will be. At the onset I take a Tylenol and get into bed and a dark quiet room. Last pregnant I believe I had two and I think two or three postpartum. I have had one so far with this preganacy. I hope that will be it! The dr said sleep as much as possible so that the hormonal changes don't hit so hard.
