Chalkboard, yay or nay?

I'd like to put up a chalkboard wall for DD1 in the family room but DH thinks the chalk dust will be too messy. Does anyone have a chalkboard for their LO, does it work in practice or is it a total mess? The room is carpeted if that makes a difference.

    I have no experience with this in my own house but I am a teacher. Even the "dustless chalk" isn't really dustless so if that room is carpeted, I don't recommend it.

    We have one in our son's room. The only problem we have had is the colored chalk getting on his bed spread. I usually just stick with the white chalk and we haven't had many issues!

    We are doing a small section, in a closet, of chalkboard painted wall.....I like it!

    At her age especially, likely a total mess.  Even my DD (27 months) makes a mess out of any form of coloring, especially if I have to step out of the room for even a couple of minutes.

    Total mess. You can get chalk markers rather than real chalk that I think are slightly less messy, but I don't know if they're really safe/appropriate for children.

    Our pantry door in the kitchen is chalkboard. Easiest place to clean up off the tile floor...

    The kid has a chalkboard wall in his room. Hasn't been a problem. I've seen people do a table top with chalkboard paint instead of a wall.

    My dad has one for the grandkids in his basement. It's a finished room with carpet, and there's never been an issue. The oldest grandkid is almost 3.
