How long did you co-sleep?

DH and I are planning on having our little one sleep in our room with us for a bit before transferring him/her to their own room. If you went this route, how long did you do this? Were there any unique challenges you had to overcome?

Part of my reason for wanting to know is that we live in one of the most expensive cities in the country. We're saving up for a house, but we're not quite there yet. We're hoping to make the most of our current apartment until we absolutely need the additional bedroom, and we're trying to figure out when that might happen.

Thanks for the insight!

Re: How long did you co-sleep?

  • DS has slept in bed with me since day 1. I don't see that changing in the immediate future, party due to COL, partly because we both like it and it works for us. If you're planning to BF, having your LO in bed with you saves sooo much time and sleep.

  • About 8 months. He was nursing through out the night and I wasn't sleeping. For the most part it's been a seamless transition. If I could do it again I would to it the same but with a arms reach co sleeper so they're used to their own space.

  • Yes definitely. We're first time parents, so all of this is completely new to us. Friends with little ones have told us that if breastfeeding it's super convenient to have them in the same room, especially, so that's a bonus, too!

And by co-sleeping I mean that he/she will be in their own crib or other bedding, just in our room, near our bed for easy access. I don't think we'll full on do the same bed thing (though I understand why some prefer it.)

  • She slept in an attached cosleeper for almost a year, then in our bed a couple months, then on a floor bed next to our bed (with me in it with her) until two and a half, then in her room (same floor mattress, but in her room, and still with me in it.  Around 3-ish I stopped sleeping the whole night in there with her, but when she wakes up MOTN, I still go in and finish out the night with her - I get more sleep that way.

Of course, she's ALWAYS been hard to sleep, high needs, and sensory sensitive.  So, this is *not* your average kid's history on cosleeping.

  • We did it for 4 months. I would have liked to longer, but I went back to work at 12 weeks and I wasn't sleeping well. There is no set time that's "best", it just depends what works for you. I have a coworker that has a 15 month old that still sleeps in a crib in her room.

We did a combination of the Rock n Play next to our bed and cosleeping until he was about 7 months. I wish we hadn't done it that long, because he slept a lot better by himself than with us. We live in a 2 bd place right now and we aren't planning on moving until spring or summer of 2015, so we're hoping to be able to do a similar arrangement with #2 for awhile, but since I know now that not all babies like cosleeping, I'm keeping an open mind about it.

  • DD slept in a bassinet in our room for about 4 weeks. By then she was sleeping through most of the night and was a noisy sleeper so se kicked her out to her own room. If we had to though she could have stayed for much longer.

  • Thanks so much for all the feedback! We're hoping to move into an actual house (with plenty of room for baby) in about a year or so. We have enough room in our apartment to give baby plenty of space either in our bedroom (where we plan to keep him/her for a bit) in their own sleeping space like a bassinet or crib, or somewhere else where we can section off an area, but we won't have a full bedroom for them yet until we move.

  • With my daughter we shared a bed for 7 months. Then she transitioned into a crib in my room until 1 year. Then she got her own room. With my son we did a combination of RnP, co-sleeper, and bedsharing until 10 months. Then he went into his own crib and room.

  • I still bed share with my nearly two year old. At about 18 months, due to the fact that she was kicking my H in the face, she and I moved downstairs. So, I think, if we didn't have somewhere else to sleep, I would have moved her to her own bed then.

  • Off and on all her life. It has worked for us. She has always had her own room too so we just liked co-sleeping. Now we are pushing her own bed because she is getting big and it's going better than I thought it would.

  • DS1 slept in an RnP in our room for the first 10 weeks then we transitioned to the crib. DS2 is 12 weeks today and is still in our room. I would like to have him transitioned by the time I go back to work in a couple of weeks but I don't think that is going to happen.
