STMs: Window Treatments/Nursery

Our nursery has a bay window that is facing a streetlamp across the street. We put in medium grey curtains that keep out about 50% of the light, but will obviously need additional window treatments to make it darker in there. Do you recommend getting regular 2-3" blinds or blackout shades?

Thank you!

  • We have blinds, black out curtains and regular curtains! You'd be surprised how much light still gets in. The blinds were already in his room and really did not keep light out at all. The black out curtains helped significantly. They don't truly black out the room because the rod isn't right up against the wall. Shades that truly cover the window would probably best.

  • We have normal curtains (albeit white ones) and blackout blinds.  I think that it helps during nap times, since we can make it pretty dark in there.  Even with the black out shades though, it's never perfectly dark.

  • We have 2 inch blinds and then a blackout out curtain. He is very sensitive to light in his room, so we try to keep it as dark as possible. We will do the same in the next ones room.

  • The windows have blinds and we just did regular curtains (not blackout). Since that's how it was from the beginning, that's just how she learned to sleep.

  • We had blackout curtains in the DS's nursery. It was always very dark in there. We are keeping the same ones up since DS has moved to a different room.
  • We have blinds (they were there when we moved in) and then pottery barn black out curtains.  They keep his room pretty dark, but light does get in around the edges.  He doesn't mind.  Our room has black out roman shades from bed bath and beyond and dark curtains (not black out) and our room stays very dark.

  • I just have the blinds that were there when we moved in. Quite a bit of light gets through them, but it doesn't bother our baby. Some babies are sensitive to light and sound, others aren't. But if they only ever sleep in pitch black, that's what they're going to get used to.

  • We have wood blinds and blackout curtains. It keeps the room dark (especially in summer when he goes to bed before the sun and nap time) but it's not TOO dark.

We only have blinds that cover the windows during the day (her room gets a lot of sunlight) and she's fine with it.  The curtains on the side don't close, they are just for looks. :)

When she was a baby and slept sooo bad, we tried everything and did buy blackout blind type fabric at the fabric store and used that to cover the windows.  It made the room super dark even in the middle of the day.  We eventually phased them out though and now she sleeps in her room which is pretty bright during the day just fine.

  • We have Roman shades that are supposed to be blackout but aren't really.  They darken the room pretty well though.  Daycare isn't dark when she naps there, and she sleeps fine, so I guess either way is fine.  When we were working on getting her on a good sleep schedule, though, blackout was good.  It also helps in the summer, when it's still light out at bedtime.
