Mazda5?

We started our search for a new car yesterday & landed on the Mazda5. I woke up this morning rethinking our decision to continue looking for one of these because of the lack of storage space. We will have to use all 3 rows: 3yo in the back, twins in the 2nd row. If I do that, then I was thinking I could either lay one side of the 3rd row down & slide the double stroller in or tuck it between the first 2 rows.

Anyone have one? Any ideas? I'm worried that there just isn't enough space. A couple of other forums have said that this just isn't the car for 3 kids because the 3rd row is smaller, and when it's up, there is NO trunk space.

  • We have one not as our primary car but DHs we got it cause in an emergency we can all fit but you are right no storage. We love our mini van which is primary car with the kids

  • I'm in a similar boat car shopping...I have DD who will be just over 2 when the twins come. I've been told by many twin moms to get a minivan. The logistics of getting 3 kids in and out of a car warrants the extra space IMO. I don't want to struggle to get DD out of the 3rd row. Also, I've been told you take at least a double stroller everywhere you go, plus I would want extra space for things I already keep in my trunk, plus room if we were going shopping or something. I've looked into the large SUV's that would technically work (expedition, suburban, Tahoe) and I just don't see it happening, plus to get all the features you can get on the minivan, we'd pay 10-20k more for the SUV.

  • Seriously, you gotta bite the bullet and get a minivan. I was in the same position as you and I looked at soo many SUVs with a third row but they all have zero storage with the third row up. Plus getting to the third row was always a pain. I ended up with a sienna and while it's def not cool lol it's so functional. Easy to get all 3 in and out. Plenty of storage space. Lots of kid friendly features etc. good luck!

  • We will likely be getting the Armada, Pilot or Ford Flex, and a car topper for additional storage for trips. All are said to fit 3 car seats across the back row and all three spots (on the newer models) have a 3 tether system in the back seat. Plus you still get the storage of an SUV trunk. I don't like 3rd row seating in general. And I just won't drive a minivan yet, I just can't.

There a a bunch of websites that have recommendation for SUVs that have 3 sets of tethers in the second row, maybe search out some of those?

  • I have a CX-7 and even that has little storage space when you put in a double stroller.  My suggestion would be the CX-9.  We rented one when we went to Disney with the twins.  There is so much space the stroller barely took up much room.
Just for reference we have the baby jogger city select.  It's not a small stroller.  lol

  • We have one and LOVE it but if we had a third child to consider we would absolutely have to get a different car. It's perfect for twins but you're right, with the third row up there is absolutely no storage and there is also very minimal room in that third row if you have car seats installed in the middle row.

  • We got a full size SUV that fits three cat seats across, so we keep the third row folded down for extra cargo space.

We have an Acura MDX which is built on a Honda platform - the Pilot is its "sister car"

  • Scorpgirl444 Do you have a 3rd kid in the back? That's my only concern with the CX-9. That's the one I'm looking at, but I have a 3yo who will be back there with the twins up front.

  • We survived nearly 9 months using my Nissan sentra as the family wagon. My oldest is a very tall kid and is able to use a booster. It worked but we quickly learned that once the GIANT stroller went in the car, there was barely room for a diaper bag! It made us really think about all of the things we would have a hard time doing comfortably over the next handful of years.what about a cooler for the beach or park? Roadtrip? Yeah right. Camping? No way! Even the thought of bringing a small flexible cooler, beach umbrella and enough change of clothes and towels was daunting so we didn't even consider anything where lack of trunk space would pose a problem. We went for a used Chevy Traverse and LOVE it. I will admit the mileage blows compared to my Sentra (of course, but really it's not great) but we have three comfortable rows, split seats in the second row which is perfect for loading my eldest in the back. And, lots and lots of trunk space. Do not skimp on trunk space! Lol.
