Speech Therapy (also posted in special needs)

My 21 month old son still only says Momma and Dadda. He try's to say other words sometimes but never gets there fully. We went to see my daughters neurologist today for seizure stuff she has and the Dr. Asked us about DS's lack of speech while we were there. She recommends we talk to the pedi about speech therapy for him. I will call and make an appt next week but I wanted to know if there are things we can do at home to help as well? I read to him a lot and point things out and name them. He understands a lot and verbalizes several animal sounds when I ask things like what does the cow say. Thanks!

  • sounds like you are doing all the right things already.  What you can do is to call for EI evaluation (early intervention) for your area. It is free of charge and it doesn't require a doctor's referral.

  • I would definitely call  EI.  My DD had no words at 15 mos and very limited babbling.  While her pediatrician wasn't concerned he did give me the referral and she qualified for services.  It took about 2 months from the first call to her first therapy session.

Speech therapy was a huge wonderful help for my DD and I am so glad that we did it.  Basically, at this age a therapist comes to your house and plays with you and your LO for an hour and then gives you things to work on for the week.  It's almost more for the parent than the LO.

With my DD we started off working on imitating by practicing silly faces in the mirror together and then adding silly sounds.  Then we went on to actual words.  We also worked on sign language to help pair with words.  I'm not sure if you allow your DS to watch any TV but there's a series of videos called "Baby Signing Time" that my kids love.  They move slowly and repeat words and signs over again with small children doing it.

Another thing that helped was having her watch my mouth while talking.  Her accuracy with words is much better when she watches my mouth closely.  Also, you can take books that you read over again or songs that you sing and leave off a word that is easier and try to have them fill it in.  So say "row, row, row your _" and then pause and give opportunity for them to say boat.

    Good luck!
  • We just started speech and I'm happy with it. As someone already mentioned, they come to the house, practice sounds and use toys as cues and then give us homework. We're only 1 week in, but I'm hopeful. Good luck, and get the referral...couldn't hurt.
