travelling in the back

So for the early days of Amelia dh and I would switch up driving and sitting in the back with her....well I guess she doesn't need us back there anymore, she is pretty content, can grab her paci etc, but I've come to realise I enjoy being back there as I feel my time with her each day is limited anyway.

Does anyone else sit in the back with their lo?

I used to ride in the back with him thinking that it prevented melt downs, but actually it causes them. If he gets fussy and I'm just sitting there not picking him up he gets upset. If he's all alone back there and starts to get fussy he will just fall asleep

No, I stopped after DD was about a week old. But we have a mirror on the headrest so whoever is driving can see her and she can see them.

This. She loves watching me in the mirror :)

  • I still sit in the back if DH is driving we never go far, but when I am alone with dd I have a mirro. She does well by herself. We have a 90 minute drive to my mils next weekend so we shall see how that goes!
  • I only sat in the back for the ride home from the hospital with DS1. Didn't with DS2 because we had 2 car seats in the middle rise and it was hard for me to get in the 3rd row of our minivan.

And I was advised by the licensed/certified fireman/EMT who installs my car seats to not use one of those mirrors that attaches to the car seat because they are not crash test rated and can/do come unattached and hit kids in accidents. I believe there is one that is crash test rated out there.

I call bullshit on this. All the mirrors I've seen and used are a soft flexible plastic with a plush cover. They are all buckled onto the headrest with two standard buckles. I feel like this recommendation comes from the old school mirrors that just clipped on and were hard plastic and glass.

I'm pretty sure most toys arent crash tested. But nearly all parents have some toy hanging from from the handle and don't give it a second thought.

  • With two car seats, it's a tight fit. I avoid doing it, but boy still has melt downs on occasion where I'll squeeze my fat butt between two britax seats to hang out.

  • @quartermisses our inspector told us nothing loose in the car, including groceries, purse, etc. She said "anything you don't want to throw at your baby at 60mph goes in the trunk.".

I only sit in the back if we're driving a long distance. DS usually just falls asleep anyway.

I never even thought about this--excellent point.

  • I sat in the back with her the first few weeks, but I haven't since.  She typically falls right to sleep in the car.  If she doesn't, she can pretty much entertain herself.

Dd likes to hold my hand in the car. :: heart melts:: so if I'm not driving I'm always in the back with her, I love it.

    I love it too!

  • Sometimes I still do it just depends. He likes the car now so normally I don't. If he is fussy or we want him to go to sleep then I will.
  • I'm with @katiemm623. I've never sat in the back and dd has always done just fine. I like riding in the front with DH. It's a good time for us to catch up and connect

  • I usually sit up front. We have a small car so it is not comfy at all to be back there. He still gets mad at night though so I'll sit back there with him. We went on a 3.5 hour car trip and left at 8 in the morning and he slept the entire time.

  • I sit in the back. LO really hates getting stuck in traffic and we almost always hit some wherever we go. She also like to hold my hand when we are driving. I also like to be back there to pop in a pacifier if need be. She really hates her car seat.

  • With DH's work schedule I'm usually by myself with the kids.  If we are together and he gets fussy one of us will sit in the back.  When he was a newborn and DH was on leave from work one of us always set in the back.  Of course, DS1 always sits in the back with him when he is in the car.

  • Not since she noticed big brother. We were in the car yesterday and she slen the whole time staring at him. He finally gave up trying to be cool and started making faces at her and touching her hand. Small miracles.

  • I sit in the back if we think she's going to have a meltdown or if we have to feed her in a parking lot and I don't feel like moving back to the front seat. Lately, I've been feeling carsick when I ride in back so I might stop. Or it could be because I'm bumping.

We just got to Target and she had pulled her hat down over her eyes, but DH didn't see it in the mirror. I felt bad, but she seemed to think it was funny.

P.S. smiley faces are also broken, in addition to love its!

  • @shelley1002 - this gets asked on csftl a lot. The techs there advise against the ones that cannot be securely fastened to the headresr of the car (I.e. the ones with suction cups or that just hook over). We use a britax that has a double anchor around the headrest and I got a thumbs up for it before I bought it. Several of the techs have even said they have used the soft ones from but and added safety pins to hook mirror to seat. I have leather though, so it's not an option.

Just curious - did the tech also tell you not to have ANY lose objects in the cabin of your car ( to include your purse, phone, cup in a cup holder, teething toy, groceries, ytik-style wig, etc)?

He said to limit them. I don't carry a purse and keep my wallet in my pocket or glove box, rarely do I have a cup or bottle in the car, groceries get hooked on the grocery hooks that close, kids are allowed stuffed animals in the car (DS2 doesn't like teething toys. On long trips DS1 will have a cup. Diaper bag gets wedged between 2 seats. I hate having stuff in the car, especially after getting injured by stuff after hitting a wall head on at 60mph 5 years ago.

I sat in the back on the way home from the hospital.  That was it.  I might if we had more room, but I have a small car, and it is cramped with the seat in the middle.

This. LO usually falls asleep by the time we leave the driveway anyway. Plus, I didn't want him to rely on me riding back there in order for him to feel safe, happy, and comfortable, since I drive alone a lot.

  • The only time I sat in the back was on the way home from the hospital. She doesn't mind the car seat at all.

  • I do when we drive together, but I'm usually alone with her. She's okay alone, but it's easier to stop/prevent a meltdown wen I'm in the back with her :)

  • I've never rode in the back with DS. Even coming home from the hospital, I sat up front. Of course, DD's seat was in the way, but honestly, I didn't even think about it. Usually DS is fine in the car. DD keeps him company. She loves singing to him and playing peek a boo. Since he is rear facing and she us forward facing, that works really well. Anyways, I like sitting up front with DH.We do a lot of our catching up in the car.

  • I still sit in the back.  I have a tiny car so the only way to fit the car seat was to put it behind the passenger seat with the seat pushed forward.  It is not a comfortable place to sit anymore, plus I love hanging out with LO.
  • Yeah, one it us will sit in the back with her if we are together.
