Printable: Signs asking visitors to wash hands

Somewhere, maybe in the playdate thread? I mentioned that I was going to make some signs that could be hung on the door letting visiting folks know to wash hands. Several of you said you'd like a copy. The two options are on Flickr; you're free to print as you like, but please don't share, sell, distribute as your own. Orange one here: https://flic.kr/p/kSKaq8 Pink and blue here: https://flic.kr/p/kSJrRi

  • OH! this is such a great idea!!!! my dad can be super forgetful about things. thnx for sharing!!!
  • I think washing hands or at least putting on some hand sanitizer for holding a NB makes sense. I wouldn't be like crazy upset if someone forgot, though. Not saying anyone here is; just my $.02.

As long as people are washing their hands after using the bathroom, handling food/cigarettes, working outside in the yard, or doing something really messy, you'll be fine. Someone who just drove to your house to visit the baby? Not that big of a deal.

I don't know, maybe I'm lapse when it comes to washing hands, but I don't wash my hands after every little thing, or before picking up my daughter, and I didn't ask people to do so, either. I won't do it with this baby. When I'm home, I wash my hands after the bathroom, after working outside or helping DH in the garage, and before handling food.

Then again, my husband's a mechanic and DD was in the shop at two weeks old, and pretty regularly after that for lunch dates with DH. I also have dogs that are going to carry in more stuff into my house than people will. I just think it's possible to go overboard, and these signs are a step in that direction.

If you child is immuno-comrpomised, that's a different story. But a perfectly healthy newborn who is in the process of building up an immune system? Normal hand washing is fine.

    Just my 0.02.
Pretty much all of this for me. I kept sanitizer around but I didn't have to ask people to wash their hands. Plus, they were already on top of it.

I do think your signs are cute and it's nice of you to share with us OP :)

ETA: If you happen to make a sign along the lines of, "Do not ring the doorbell... the baby is sleeping", that would be right up my alley. We had problems with that one. Lol.

Okay, you've said it. I understand your words. I'm sharing these because some folks said they'd like to access them.

  • No need to get upset about it OP. You did a nice thing by posting something people and asked for, but some people are bound to politely disagree. Tis de internets after all.

-------dumb formatting--------- Omg I need a sign that says that and "if you make my dogs bark and wake up the baby I will punch you in the neck"
Hah! I actually did make one of those about a year ago for a friend that mentioned both the doorbell and the dog barking. I'll look for it. It didn't apply to me -- I have neither.

Haha... that's great! I swear I never had anyone ring the stupid doorbell until I had a baby and it was always right when I would put them to sleep.

@ElTrain5 I was trying to be polite... but your idea is much better!

  • @wtfisup‌ I like them! We have a sign similar asking people to remove their shoes before coming in.. We still
Have to ask some people who seem to "miss the sign". I think hand sanitizer is an easier method to enforce but with all this hype about soap/antibacterial not working who knows what is better?!

For us, the hand washing is pretty simple because when they walk in the door, they enter the kitchen and walk RIGHT BY  the sink. They have to in order to get to the living room. (We have a front door, but from parking, folks enter the kitchen.) I'll probably keep a bottle of sanitizer in the living room just in case anyone prefers that.

  • Thanks for the signs.  It's great of you to share.  I will be posting these.

  • Lol...this post makes me laugh. My cousin came to visit last winter and brought her son. I was at my Grandma's house and went to pick him up out of the pack'n'play before being reminded to wash my hands....he was 8 months old!

Anyways....I do think you should be courteous enough to wash your hands before holding a newborn. Your signs are cute! My family would give me a very hard time if I hung them up though :)

  • Cute signs.  Im going to make some when baby starts crawling for people to remove their shoes.
  • I would totally get side eyed if I put these up in my home! I let adults handle their own hygiene and no one has gotta my first son sick so far. I WILL take one of the "do not ring the bell" signs! The dogs get very protective when DS is asleep and inevitably bark like Kojo whenever someone rings the doorbell. It's nice to have a guard dog, but it's always right at nap time.

  • I'd definitely make people wash their hands. If they have a problem with it, I have a problem with them holding my hypothetical newborn baby.

  • For me personally, the vast majority of my friends don't have children and don't have the first clue about appropriate hygeine before holding a baby. My best friend has two dogs that she lets slobber all over her constantly and I rarely see her wash her hands after touching them so I most definitely would have a sign like this up for people like that who plan to visit my home when baby is still little. In the original post about these (it was a while ago, I forget the title) I also mentioned my ILs who have terrible hygeine in general but most importantly, are both heavy smokers and are not the types to even try to do anything to rid themselves of the cigarette smell/residue before touching or holding the baby. In fact, they would probably not even notice or think of it and would happily grab the baby out of my arms with a lit cigarette hanging out of their mouth. So these signs will come in very handy for me on a number of levels!

    Thanks, @wtfisup!

How about a sign that says "Must bring the mommy food before holding the baby?"

    I'd love that lol.

But DH and I became germaphobes after DS was born (more DH than me really.). I'm sure it'll be in overdrive once DD is born. Especially with my FIL. He can be pretty gross and complained when we asked him to sanitize his hands when DS was born.

I have never understood this. It's not your kid. Regardless of your feelings, it's not about you. Get on board. It's washing your hands, not cutting off your favorite appendage.
I know! He doesn't understand why it's a big deal. My DH has already said that can see a fight happening when DD is born. I mean, we're talking about a man who doesn't use soap to wash his hands. Ever, not even after going to the bathroom. Yuck.
