Any LOs still in RnP?

Are anyone's LOs still sleeping in the RnP? DS has slept in his beside our bed since the day he came home. He did sleep in a crib while he was hospitalized, but only with a "nest" of rolled blankets around him.
At his last pedi appt (@ 5 months) the Dr said he needed to be in his crib. Crib in nursery isn't an option for us currently as we are rooming-in for a variety of reasons. The Dr (who I'm not a fan of and has given bad advice before, but we only have 1 pedi practice and you don't get to choose which Dr. you see) said he "needed to be in a crib no later than 2 months because he needs room to roll around".
So anyway, last night we tried the PnP. It was an epic fail - no stretch of sleep longer than 5 or 10 min. I finally co-slept which is a bad habit I don't want to start. Co-sleeping just isn't a good option for us.
So, few questions:
1. Is it really time to transition out of RnP?
2. If so, any tips for transition?
3. Safe to do a "nest" of rolled blankets?
HELP!

Re: Any LOs still in RnP?

  • I would want to transition out as soon as possible, mainly bc the longer he is in it the harder it will be I would think. And I wouldn't feel comfortable with the nest thing...Im all no blankets or anything in bed, my LO sleeps in a completely empty Pack n Play. Im not sure if this would help you are not but we ordered an extra mattress for the PnP and he seems more comfortable. It's thicker like a real matress, not just the one that comes with the PnP. GL!

  • I was told (or read) that an extra mattress was a safety concern in the PnP. We had planned on getting one until I found that out.

  • My DD slept in her PnP  in the "bassinet" setting but, when she grew too heavy for it the lack of padding on the lower setting kept her from sleeping. I bought a mattress for it off Amazon and she sleepd great in it now. We never used the RnP overnight due to out giant dogs being able to sniff and lick her. I wouldn't do the "nest" thing personally for safety reasons. I wouldn't sweat putting your LO on his crib until your ready. My pedi told me her LO's shared a room with her till they were almost a year. It just depends on your family and their sleeping preferences. Good Luck!

  • We've been transitioning to the crib this weekend from the rnp.  She naps in it about 1/2 the time, but she's been anti-nap lately though so I wasn't sure.

She did fine the last few nights thankfully, and although she didn't wake up fully she didn't sleep as soundly (I assume because when she would move she would wake up).

We didn't use any sort of nest to help.  I moved her because she was getting to long for the rnp, not because I wanted to really.

  • Guilty...my LO is still in his rnp. We are trying to transition into the crib, but it's hard.
  • My LO still does the RnP maybe 2-3 nights a week. Only if she is already asleep when i get off work and pick her up. I got her a Magic Merlin Sleep suit and it works!

  • Whether it's "time" or not is up to you. We moved LO to his crib in his own room at 2 months, cold turkey, and he has been there ever since. He was too scrunched up in the Rock & Play, so he was waking himself up every time he couldn't stretch out -- I moved him out and he slept like a champ.

I honestly don't think there are any tricks to transition, just be consistent and be prepared for a few rough nights.

Also, if you do a search, you'll find more threads on this issue.

  • We moved LO out of the RnP last month (4 month) to a bassanet, still in our room. He has been sleeping great. We will be moving him to his crib in a few weeks.

  • We moved him out of the RNP...gosh, maybe 2 months ago now? He sleeps in his crib with a wedge and a u-shaped towel under the sheet. I am gradually transitioning the towel out, but it really helped him as it mimicked the 'feel' of the RNP (supports his legs under his knees). It was a rough first night, up almost every hour, but we stuck with it and the second night he slept like a champ.

DD still naps in the rnp and sleeps there maybe half of the time.

  • With all the sleep troubles we have been having anyway, these threads make me happy DS didn't need head elevation and could sleep flat in his cosleeper from day 1. I can't imagine transitioning to flat on top of the normal sleep regression. I hope you get it figured out soon. I hear you about it being a pain going to the nursery all night long.

  • If we are home, DS normally naps in the RnP (he's always slept at night on his crib).

  • We started transitioning out of the RNP about 2 weeks ago.  The first night was rough and I gave up pretty quickly, but now she is STTN in the crib.  She doesn't sleep quite as well as she did in the RNP, but it is getting better every night.

  • DS still sleeps in his RNP but it's mostly bc he can't sleep soundly if he's not swaddled and we can't put him in his crib swaddled bc he can roll over. It's a big cluster right now, but my friend is letting us borrow her MMSS to see how it works for us.

DS is still in the RNP. He slept in the crib until his reflux dramatically changed his and my life around 3 months old. I have so many other issues to deal with every day just getting him to eat anything that by nap and night time I am too exhausted to get up every 5-10 mins when he is in the crib. He will get in the crib soon, just not now. He is well under the weight limit and can't roll so I don't feel it is unsafe. I'm just praying we can get through the transition without me losing my mind when the time comes.

  • We are still using the r&p too. I'm not ready for him to be out of our room. I know we have to start soon and I'm not looking forward to it.

  • We keep saying we need to transition but I just keep pushing if off. :( she's still waking up 1-2 times a night to eat. I don't know if it's the best idea but we're thinking about moving her crib into our room to at least get her used to the crib, then try to eventually move it over to her room. It's just so hard but we had to do what we could to survive in the very beginning.

  • We definitely aren't moving him out of our room, just to the PnP in our room. I guess my "concern" is he seems 100% content in the RnP, sleeps 6-8 hours/night. So, do I mess with that now? Am I doing harm by allowing him to continue in the RnP?

Mine was sleeping 8-10 hours a night in the RNP when I moved him. I knew sleeping in the RNP was not ideal, so I wanted to transition away from it as soon as possible.

  • We are currently on night #3 out of the RnP. I kept going back to it, but there will be no RnP next week when we visit my parents in Fl. so PnP it is! It's been harder to get her to fall asleep, but once she does, she sleeps fine. I feel like she grunts and whines more in her sleep, but doesn't really cry. And I am still swaddling for now... So far she only rolled once and I was right next to her to roll her back. She wears a Snuza, so I'm not too worried.

I plan in keeping her here until 6 mo. (Which is less than a month away), but we'll see... I think she would sleep good in her own room without us tip-toeing around her at night & in the morning, but I will miss her being close by :(

We just transitioned in the last week from RNP to Crib in our room. It's friggin hard! First started with having him napping in the crib.
First full Night in the crib I was up 8 or so times but I was hell bent on making it work. Last night was our best night so far. I have him sleep in a fleecey sleep sack, I bought a crib sheet that is the same fleecey/ minky material as the RNP. For whatever reason if I put him in the crib on his side he will fall asleep then roll to his back and continue sleeping.
    Good luck!
  • I think we are going backwards....he has slept in his crib since day 2 but the last two weeks he has woken up and not gone to sleep for two hours so I have been bringing him in the rnp to sleep halfway through the night...he now sleeps perfect in it. I deft do not want to get him in this habit....great.
