Spanish immersion

We live in White Bear Lake and would like to raise our LO speaking English and Spanish. Does anyone have any recommendations for a Spanish immersion daycare or a nanny that is fluent in Spanish? Also, our LO is only 6 weeks old, but we would love to find other families who live nearby and also speak Spanish or are raising bilingual children for some support and to do some play dates in the future.

Re: Spanish immersion

  • I also plan on raising my LO speaking Spanish. I speak Spanish but I am going to find an (abuelita) granny that speaks Spanish to do my daycare once she is born. I am still in search and have a few options, they are usually 100 week for daycare but for nannies, childcare centers etc try care.com

  • I don't have any recommendations for daycare but work as an elementary Spanish immersion teacher and wanted to say, yeah! It's so amazing how quickly kids can develop language skills. I work in Spring Lake Park and they have some ECFE classes that are bilingual and I read recently WBL is considering starting an elementary immersion program.

  • I don't know of any daycares in White Bear Lake, but there are one or two in St. Paul, one in Eagan, one in Edina, a few in Minneapolis, and one in Eden Prairie. Depending on your normal commute, maybe one in St. Paul or Minneapolis would work? My children used to go to Jardin Magico in Edina and the full Spanish immersion was amazing - and I loved the teachers.

  • We are looking for the same thing. My daughter is 9 months and I go back to work in a few weeks. We have been on the waitlist for Jardin Magico for just over a year. I actually came to the board to see if anyone has any recs for Spanish speaking nannies. I'm getting so anxious about the fact that we don't have childcare set up yet. I've had 9 months...ugh! I was hoping we would finally get off the waitlist but no luck yet!

  • My sister in law's husband is from Mexico and they have three children that attend schools in St Paul and they live right near White Bear Lake AVE off of 94. I can ask her what schools they attend if you would like. They love their schools and they do a lot of spanish, english as well as fun exercise such as Zumba!!

I swear by Adams spanish immersion in st.paul, my 8 year old step son goes there and i went there. Thats a lot farther down the line for you though. I know most centers do spanish in their program now days. I used to teach at primrose and they teach quite a bit of spanish. my 3 year old preschool class knew days, numbers, colors, months and some other things in spanish. Its a pricey school but its a great center and they do a good job incorporating spanish.

ETA: primrose is located in woodbury and there one is in eagan, the rest would be farther out for you.

  • My son was on the waitlist at Jardin forever, he only finally got in because Edina opened. I kept him on Minnehaha's but a space never opened (1.5 years after putting him on). Fortunately, we had sibling preference when I had my daughter, so she only was on the waitlist 5 months. We were very happy with the program and our children were sad to leave - but they left around the time of all those immigration issues so literally all of their teachers were gone at the same time so if we had stayed, they wouldn't have been there. They still have many wonderful teachers though, I'm sure you will be very happy when you end up getting in.

Have you considered going to there Eden Prairie location? I thought I had heard there were more openings there. Not sure where you live/work but that might be an option if thats in your area.

We considered Primrose, Kinderberry, etc. While they do some basic Spanish - it's nothing like full immersion. Full immersion is very important to us because we want our children to be fluent.

  • I've been teaching Spanish Immersion (first and fourth grade) for the past 9 years. I'm thinking about starting an immersion or bilingual home daycare in White Bear Lake and it's great to know there is some interest!
