car seat placement? your opinion?

On the way to church this morning DH were talking about how there's going to be two car seats in the back pretty soon :) Which got us thinking... if you have two kids, which side do you choose to put each of their car seats on?
Right now DD's seat is on the right back seat because that way I can easily turn to see her and talk to her. But once the new baby comes is it better to put the newborn on the right, even though it's impossible to see them anyways with the rear facing seat? Or put the newborn behind the driver's seat and leave DD where she is?

I know it's going to be partial personal preference, but what have your experiences been with what works best?

  • For us, we put the baby behind the driver and the other seat behind the passenger while DS1 was still RF because that was the best fit. When DS2 graduated to a convertible seat, we switched to put him behind the passenger, and DS1 moved behind the driver, forward facing. It's what fit best for our cars.

You will most likely get the baby out first so your LO1 is not running loose while you get baby out. So put baby behind you so you don't have to go around the car twice. Get out, get baby from behind the driver side, then go around and get toddler out.
Disagree with getting baby out first. But, we never take the car seat out. Baby always goes in my arms, a mei tai or other carrier, or in a stroller. And it's usually a Boba carrier these days. And it's too hard to get the other 2 out while wearing baby in it, so the other two get out first.

Our rule is touch the car or touch mommy until we start walking.

FWIW, I also did the same when it was just two.

All that being said, baby is behind the driver (and our baby has always been there). I get out, walk around, get LO (now J. and A.) out, they walk back around with me to get baby out.

  • I put the baby behind the driver's seat because I need to be able to talk to/hand things to/see my toddler more so than the baby.
  • I like having the baby behind the driver so we can see her with the "baby mirror," and DS behind the passenger which seems to make it easier to talk to him and hand him things.

We do what barnwife does, I always get DS out first and bring him to the other side with me to get the baby out, he stands between my legs and the car, or holds onto the driver's door handle next to me while I grab her. If it's freezing I unbuckle him and have him crawl through to get out DD's door.

DH and I are both tall.  I didn't have a vehicle that a rear facing car seat would fit behind the driver.  Not sure if a RF seat would fit in our vehicle now because DD was almost 3 and FF when we got it.

I had one in the middle and one behind the passenger, then those and one in the back.
Now we have two boosters in the back and the little one I need to buckle in the middle.
  • DS1 is behind me FF.  DS2 is behind the passenger RF.  We have a small car and the seat has to be moved forward to accomodate a RF carseat.  I'm very long legged and need more leg room so the passenger seat is where DS2 goes.
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • Carpool line at school, dance drop off and voice are all served with DD getting out on the passenger side, so she's on that side, DS is behind me.
  • We've always had DS behind the driver because at our old house I parked on the street and it was a PITA to try to stand on the curb to put him in. Now in the van it truly doesn't matter because I can't reach either seat from the front. As far as getting kids in/out I usually get DS out first and he hangs out inside the van or stands next to me while I get the baby

  • It's not a pain in ours at all. Those huge gas guzzling Earth killers have lots of room.
