Moving with an 8 week old

Hi all! My husband and I currently live in NC. He received a transfer to PA for his job. We have an 8 week old daughter. We FINALLY have her in a good routine.. sleeping habits are settling in and becoming regular. Any advice on keeping routine and sleep habits intact with a big move like this? I dont think i can mentally or physically handle re-sleep training her again! LOL

Re: Moving with an 8 week old

  • Do you mean actual sleep training or just finding a routine?

If you have routines with her like certain sequence of events before bedtime, etc, try to keep those up and be consistent. I can't imagine an 8 week old on any kind of real schedule, though, so I wouldn't worry about it. They change so much regardless of what we do.

My sister's family did a cross-country move when her youngest was about that age.  She's a firm believer in routines; her four kids thrive on them.  She said the youngest was the easiest to keep on schedule -granted he was sleeping a lot and could sleep anywhere still - during the move and had the easiest time adjusting once they made the move.  She didn't hesitate to take people up on offers to help; baby sitters for the older kids, friends to help them pack and move out of their house etc.

I think your baby will do what it feels like doing - sleeping, crying, being awake and happy - regardless of your circumstances.  Make sure you take quality time to feed her. Otherwise relax.  Any adjustments will be very temporary for her.

Also, as a STM and based on my experience, I can honestly say that babies sleep habits change a lot their first year.  They'll be great sleepers for weeks, then suddenly be awake more, then go back to being wonderful little resters.  This is true even if you are vigilant about establishing routines for them.

Again, relax, focus on feeding your baby and good luck with the move!
