Baby carrier for 5lbs baby?

Hi friends. Help needed. I want to buy a baby carrier for my SIL, who just brought home a 5lbs ds. K'tan, MOBY and Ergo all start at 8lbs. I was hoping for something that she could use right away.
Any brands or types that work for smaller babies? Or any advice?
Thanks so much!

  • I know it's a no no but I've been wearing DD in the moby and k'tan for the last week or so (she's 4 weeks and just barely 7 lbs). With 2 older kids to chase, it's the only way! As long as she is careful and paying close attention, I think it's fine. Of the two, I think I like the moby better- feels more secure. But the k'tan is definitely less daunting!

  • My baby was 5 lbs 6 oz, and I waited quite a while to use the Moby.  I was just so afraid that she wouldn't be able to breathe and I wouldn't notice.  Little babies are more fragile.  I would get an ergo and then she can use it for years.  Mobies, and to a lesser extent, K-tans, are on craigslist daily, so pick one of those up for cheap and throw it in if you want.
  • No baby carriers are made for preemies or low birthweight babies. Unfortunately your SIL is going to have to wait until he is a bit heavier to use a carrier. I think that the beco Gemini and ergo(with infant insert) start at 7lbs.

  • My son was 4lbs 11oz at birth.  I waited until he was older and a little over 7lbs to use my k'tan

  • My LO left the Hosp at 4-11 and the neonatologist recomended the ergo with the infant insert or moby.
  • It's not a traditional carrier, but Vija Desgns makes kangaroo care shirts that you carry your baby in. I loved mine, very comfortable and stylish even when not carrying baby. I'm not sure what weight limits are, but know that they are advertised for preemies.
