TV

Im also on the WTE site and they are having a serious discussion about tv time.

Alot of the moms are super against having the tv on at all when LO is in the room. I think that is a little extreme because besides the colors and sounds catching their attention, they dont actually sit and watch tv, at least mine doesnt for more than a few minutes.

I do agree that tv time should be limited when they are a little older just to make sure they are getting enough stimulation.

What is your view on having the tv on throughout the day? What age will you start limiting tv time?

Re: TV

  • I don't have the TV on in the house very often these days, but I don't mind having it on when DD is around. However, I would never let her sit in front of a TV all day, even if she wasn't watching it. Also, on evenings where she is up with the TV on, she tends to sleep worse, so we really don't turn on the TV in the evenings at all.

My dh decided to buy a huge tv and it takes up most of a wall. It's about 56". We don't sit her down in front of it, but she does look at it occasionally. I won't lie...she loves Wheel of Fortune. It's the only show she "pays" attention to.

  • I have the tv on most of the day, but she doesn't spend much time in front of it. We do turn it off before naps and bed though.

  • I have the tv on for certain periods during the day, but it's off for naps and there is no tv at all after 5:00 pm (two hours before bedtime). She doesn't really watch it all that much, except for Sesame Street and NCIS.

  • TV is usually on in the evenings. LO only pays attention when we watch The Simpsons because of the bright colors. I tend to have him play on the floor with his back turned to the TV if DH is watching a lot of TV. But we don't go out of our way to not let him watch. But I try to be more aware of TV time on the weekends when it's easy to just veg in front of the TV for DH and me.
  • I usually have the tv on for white noise if we aren't watching it. DD has sat and watched some episodes of Mickey Mouse clubhouse so momma could eat. I'm not that concerned. I'll start limiting it when she's paying attention a little more.
  • I am another who has the TV on all day. She will sit on my lap with me and "watch" stuff, but she does not pay attention to it....As others said, when she gets older, we will worry more.

  • This morning I resorted to baby tv to get an extra half hour of sleep bc someone decided 430 am was a great time to wake up for the day..We're tv ppl.. It's on constantly. Like others said, when he gets older, I'll worry about the content, but until then if it keeps him happy while I go to the bathroom or catch A few more zzzzs at the ass crack of dawn, I won't lose any sleep over it.. Haha.. See what I did there? ;-)

DH is a TV watcher. I'm not. So when I have LO, I only use the TV for music channels. If he has LO, it's on a lot.

I find tv annoying. Even TLC has sold out to reality. There's nothing educational on. It's all crap.
  • I'm not much of a tv watcher but H and I have gotten into the habit of watching Doc McStuffins every morning. That show is effing adorable.

IMO, at this age she is intrigued by the colors, sounds and movement. I think that's a good thing. Everything she sees is new to her.

  • I usually have the tv on in the background most days and occasionally DS will pay attention to it but nothing concerning. I've turned Sesame Street on for him a few times and he'll watch for a few minutes but other than that he couldn't care less. That said, we're dropping cable soon and going with streaming so that will probably cut down on the 'background' tv watching around here.

  • Id be a liar if i said i never use the tv as a baby sitter. Ive thrown in disney movies for ds so i can cook supper. He likes the music but usually i try to keep.the tv off when hes awake. I use music on my phone for background noise and ds likes that. Hell dance in the jumper when he hears music

  • I have it on a lot but if it seems to be distracting him I will turn it off.
  • TV is definitely on a lot for background noise... my hubby is a firm believer that it doesn't matter and is a big video gamer. However, I believe in limiting it and getting outside instead once he's older. We'll see what happens.

  • I watch tv while DS naps in my arms in the afternoon. When he wakes up we'll typically cuddle together while I finish watching whatever it is I'm watching. He'll "watch" with me for a bit that way. I'll either turn it off afterwards, or leave it on turned down for a bit background noise while I make dinner. DS's play zone doesn't have direct site of it, so it's not even an issue.
I'm not opposed to children watching a moderate amount of TV but I really want to try and limit it.

  • We don't have it on much during the day and if we do, then it's almost always sports.

The big one watches one or two shows most mornings. The babies don't "watch" any - meaning I don't ever purposefully set them down in front of it. I don't mind if they're in the room, but I usually face them away.

We had a larger issue w iPads and iPhones than TV. The big one much prefers them bc he can start, stop and replay streaming video, etc. it got to the point where he'd throw a fit every time we turned it off. So we stopped turning it on - problem solved.

Fwiw, the big one didn't watch any kiddie content (excluding sports and incidental TV) until 20-22mo and then it was sparingly until prob 2.5yo when he took a real interest. Fit throwing peaked around 3.5yo and we've cut way way down on screen time since then.

  • We have our tv in the basement and LO and I never go downstairs. DH and I rarely watch tv so we have only Netflix, no cable.
LO seems curious when he sees TVs at other people's houses or when we're out.
I'm trying to have him watch no tv before 2, maybe even 3. Emphasis on trying.

When DS1 was small I didn't watch much tv with him around, or have it on. If I want background noise I listen to music.

Now that DS1 is 2.5, he watches one show around 2pm for 30 min and another show for 45 min after dinner. If DS2 happens to be around when it's on, NBD.

I probably get to watch 4 hours of TV a week...with work, babies, house stuff...I just don't have the time.

    I miss tv!

  • I'm pretty anti TV for young children, and I'm glad I was with DD1. She's obsessed with it. I can't imagine what she would be like if I had it on constantly when she was younger.

These days I try to limit her screen time (TV, iPad, her Leappad, ect) to an hour a day. I don't like the TV on if DD2 is in the room.

My LO loves Wheel too, it must be the colors!

The tv is on a lot, though I don't watch it a lot, I just like background noise. LO doesn't really pay it too much attention. In the morning when we first get up I'll put her on her giggle garden and put on a cartoon while I eat breakfast . She usually only looks at the tv occasionally but at least if she's looking it's kid appropriate. I'm not worried about it right now, but we will limit tv once she's old enough to really pay attention to it.
