Middle names?

I've decided on first names but middle names are giving me trouble I've picked two but I'm not sold on them, if it's a girl I like Lucy, middle name maybe Grace and if it's a boy I like Kenneth, middle name maybe Drake.... Opinions?

Re: Middle names?

  • Well I'm way behind. We haven't chosen the first names.

  • Haha well I've had Lucy and Kenneth picked out since I was little. The names are in honor of my grandparents. My grandmother called me Lucy my whole life (not sure why because my names Emily) and my grandfathers name is Kenneth Joseph. I don't want to name it directly after him just honor him in it.

  • I love Grace as a middle name. I actually considered Lily Grace as a possible name. Middle name for boys I always like classic stuff like Andrew, James or Alexander. I think Drake sounds good too. It's a nice contrast from a classic like Kenneth. Good luck! Who knew something that seems so simple could be so challenging!

  • Both sound nice together. It's hard to know without hearing the last name, but go with your gut.
We have first name lists but that's it so far.

  • We had Elysia Grace picked out if DS#2 was a girl, so I like Grace, but am partial to it. As far as a boy's middle name I don't know what to tell you. I like the sound of Kenneth Drake, but it is not my style.

DH and I cannot agree on names right now so you are definitely ahead of me.

  • My rule of thumb is, if first name is long MN should be short, like for example Elizabeth Rose, short first name long MN for example Jane Victoria. I don't like same syllables for names like your Lucy grace...it's just not flown or elegant enough idk. I however like Kenneth drake.

  • My personal opinion on Lucy is that it is an adorable nick name, but if you were going to go with Grace as a middle why not stretch it to Lucille Grace? To me having that extra syllable sounds more elegant (and she is still Lucy).

Also Drake has never sat with me well, so I wouldn't be as sure about it.  However this is your tiny human to name, so in the end please do what makes you happy.

  • In general, I like the idea of using middle names as a nod to someone you would like to honor, or to include a family tradition. We have so many John, Helen, Thomas, and Mary names in my family, I would really hesitate to use them as a first name - but feel like the middle name spot is perfect for something like that.

But if you are honoring family with first names, find something you feels flows well that you like. I think Grace is a really lovely name in either position. Drake not quite as much.

  • I think Grace is the new Marie or Lynn. Marie was like every other girl's middle name from the 1980s and Lynn was the same in the 1990s. I have a friend who's niece is Abigail Grace and her own daughter is Ava Grace. While they're all pretty names, I just don't like something so "typical". We haven't picked first or middle names yet, for either sex. But we've only discussed it once so far. Maybe William or Benjamin for boy first names, and I'm thinking maybe Rebecca for a girl middle name, in honor of my cousin.

  • We were SET on Lucia Mae as our girl name (and we were going to call her Lucy) for all of 2 days but then realized that Lucia had been used in the family (recently, and for a child who was still-born) and we didn't want to be disrespectful so we let it go. I am a big fan of Lucy (and Ruby as well), but I do prefer a longer name. For some reason, I think Lucy Anne (don't pronounce the e) would be cute although I don't normally like Anne--- but maybe that sounds too much like Louisiana! Good luck, picking the right name has been driving me crazy. But this article from NPR might help!

Haha my middle name is Marie and my younger sister's middle name is Lynn. They are both family names in our case though, my grandmother's middle name was Marie and my great-grandmother's middle name was Lynn.

I love Grace so much, but I agree I'm seeing it so often lately I'm starting to question it. I've been loving Claire, Quinn and Jane and middles as well. For a boy it's DH's family tradition for the middle name to be Patrick, so it will be that for the first boy no matter what.

  • If we have a son, his middle name has to be Nicholas. That's my husband's name and in his family, the first son always has the father's first name for a middle name--so Nick's middle name is Gary after his father, whose middle name is John after his father, etc. I think Nick is the 4th or 5th generation to uphold that tradition. So we need to carry it on :)

  • For girl I haven't decided between bailee Kay or Ava Kay (Ava is family name). I haven't even thought about a boy name yet and I feel like I'm gonna have a boy.
  • Lucy Ann is one our list Ann is both my mom and mils middle name
  • For us, middle names are always easier.  We pick family names, as a way to honor a special person in our lives.  E is named after both of his grandfathers (who happen to share the same first name).  That was really easy for us.

For this one, if it is a girl she will most likely be named after my grandmother.  DH and I were both the only ones with her when she passed away, so I want to honor that special connection.  We may still name a boy after her, using her maiden name.  My middle name is also a family name, one that works as a boy or girl name, so that is in the running too.  It will probably decide whether this is a boy or girl and what first/middle names we like together.
