Waking habit

DS seems to have a pattern for when he wakes at night. He gets up at the same times with maybe 15 minute variation from night to night. He used to do what seemed a pretty full nurse 3 times a night, but now he is only really eating once or maybe twice and just wants to comfort nurse back to sleep the other times. I feel like he is just waking because he is used to waking, but doesn't really need to anymore. Down the road, how have STMs dealt with this? Is this the type of thing that you deal with by sleep training when they are a little older?

Re: Waking habit

  • Mine 'wakes' at regular intervals at night, too (ie the same time most nights). 9 times out of 10, he will wake even to the point of eyes fluttering open, grabbing his feet, babbling, slamming his feet down in the mattress, flinging his arms around, etc. Just when I think, welp, better go get him, I look again and he's out cold. I think it's just a part of the sleep cycle and them learning to put himself to sleep. What does yours do if you just leave him be? Does he escalate to actual crying?

  • Whoops, that should be 'put themselves to sleep' but TB is being janky this morning and won't let me edit...

  • Yes, most of the time he will start crying. I think we are on our way out of the 4mw so he has started to put himself back out sometimes, but that is usually at 5-6 am and he only goes back out for 30 min or so. He puts himself to sleep to start out with every night so I keep waiting for him to get to where he discovers he can do it when he wakes up too.

  • DS escalates to crying if I don't get him also. He can put himself to sleep to start out at night & sometimes one other time throughout the night (usually early morning hours). Other than that he wants a bottle to go back to sleep. He'll be 6 months tomorrow & I ordered that book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby so maybe I can find something to help.
  • @amber0529 I have that book and there is a lot if great stuff in there. There is some CIO involved which DS is not ready for yet, but will be useful when he gets a little older if he still needs it. I know some babies figure it out and then others (like Kimbos I think) keep getting worse until you sleep train them to help them out with it.

  • Yep, dd will still escalate to crying. I just get her put the boob in her mouth bc it easier. She's in our room until we sell our house and get a room for her so right now. I do whatever needs to be done to sleep. With DS though right now was the time I started trying to fade night feedings and teach him to soothe himself. If our situation was different I would do the same- I'm terrified of how many sleep crutches we have created. Fucking postage stamp sized house.
