Breastfeeding

Lack there of....

I've been BF since day 1 and LO is 3 weeks old. I started pumping this week and I am getting a very low amount. I'm getting 1-2 ounces from one side and MAYBE 1 ounce out of the other. Has anyone ever had this? If so is there anyway to "boost" my production? I do feed her in the middle of the night. We do give formula as well. I pump while she takes the formula and then give her the breast milk at the next feeding. I REALLY want to continue BF but I just don't know what do to about producing more milk.

Re: Lack there of....

  • The best way to produce more milk is to nurse. Is there a reason you give formula instead of BFing? The pump is not as effective at removing milk or boosting supply as the baby is. Just feed her as often as she's hungry and let her comfort nurse too if she wants. Make sure you are getting skin to skin contact while BFing by taking your top off completely and stripping her down to a diaper only. Put the bottles and formula away!

  • LO would cry until she would turn red and stop breathing after I would feed her. My mom and DH thought giving formula would help. She's been better ever since. I have noticed though that she gets the same amount from me as she does in a bottle with formula.
When I was in the hospital she went over 8 hours without eating because she wouldn't latch on. The nurses said that was fine. She had wet and dirty diapers. After we got home is when I started having problems. She cried all the time. I couldn't get her to latch on. I was getting upset because she was upset. DH tried to help me but then he ended up getting frustrated. I sat and cried.
I've been drinking mother's milk tea with honey, drinking water and trying to eat better. I did pump this morning and got a total of 3 oz. I hadn't pumped since 1230a. It's usually 2-3 hours between pumpings. If I feed her it usually 1 1/2-2 hours between feedings.
  • I agree with p.p.and have similar questions about your decision to supplement. How you feed your baby is a personal decision and I am facing possible supplementation myself, so this advice is definitely judgement free. But if breastfeeding is important to you, as much as possible, put away the pump, put away the bottles and formula, and put the baby to the breast, often. Every time you feed your baby with something than your breasts, it hurts your supply. Especially in this very early point in your nursing relationship. It is not too late to turn things around. If you are pumping instead of nursing, which is much harder, you need to be pumping at every single feeding she gets that isn't directly from your breasts, just for right now at least.

  • My LC said to avoid honey as babies cannot digest it. Noticed you indicated you put honey in your tea.
  • @nebrasskagal, babies can't have honey, I've been told nursing mothers can, by an LC. My LO has experienced no issues for the past 9 months.

  • Agree with PP about putting LO on the breast as much as possible. Also, could you go to a LC, or even your pedi's office, and do a weighted feeding so you'll know how much LO is getting when she nurses? It's definitely not too late to turn things around. We had problems in the beginning (long story) and had to supplement. The best thing I ever did was put away the bottles and just let her nurse on demand. She was attached to me most of the time, but it really helped increase my supply. You might also try lactation cookies and fenugreek. Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies!! I'm going to call in the morning to set up an appointment. I want to BF and not have to use formula.
