prenatal care at Johns Hopkins Hospital

Hi,

I had my first prenatal appts today and yesterday at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (it is my first pregnancy). As I read some low opinions about the staff there, I want to share my experience:

When I came there yesterday, everyone was really friendly and helpful. The appointment with the nurse was fun, although she had to ask a lot of serious/medical questions.

Today I had an appointment with the ob/gyn and an ultrasound afterwards. Again everyone was friendly and it was a relaxed atmosphere.

To sum up, I can say that it was a nice experience and I definitely will stay at Johns Hopkins Hospital for prenatal care and delivery.

I am really happy today! The "baby" is fine (I really like ultrasound now!), the ob/gyn told me that I'm very healthy and there is nothing to worry about Smile

  • Thanks for sharing! It would always freak me out when I would read negative stuff about hospital so it's always good to hear positive feedback too and more importantly congrats! The ultrasounds are SO FRIGGIN AMAZING and I know I was on some crazy momma high after seeing baby for the first time.

    I agree Julia -

I've now been 3 times (my pregnancy is a bit complicated) and am LOVING my OB. I am with Meredith Birsner.  I switched from Greenspring- where I was not satisfied with my pre-preg gyno care, to the main hospital for pregnancy.

Who is your OB?  Meredith will be away for a couple of months coming up and I want to hand pick whom I schedule with during that time. If you don't mind sharing your doc : )

  • My ob/gyn is Dr. Graham and I feel very comfortable with him. I don't know if one always has the same ob/gyn or if it does rotate I just had one appointment with the ob/gyn , but my next appt is also with Dr. Graham...

    I think you will find a good alternative doctor there anyway ;
  • This might be a dumb question but which John Hopkins Hospital? I am new to the area and found out I was pregnant within 5 months of moving here and had to pick a hospital to deliever at without knowing much. Do you know anything about John Hopkins Bayview or were you seen at a different John Hopkins? My other option was Howard County General which is an affliate of John Hopkins. I'm really nervous I didn't choose the right one since I don't really know anything about either.
  • Actually, I am also new to the area and haven't been to any other hospital. I chose the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the City [I think the ob/gyn is located at 600 N Wolfe St] because I live close by the hospital and my husband is working there. So he can be with me within 2 minutes once the baby decides to be born Smile

I read a lot of positive things about the Howard County General here too, so I think at the end both hospitals are fine and it doesn't matter which hospital you choose.

The brand new birthing center is at the main Hopkins in the city. It just opened within the year.  Haven't had a peek, but its supposed to be nice.

  • The new birthing center is fabulous (although I don't really like the interior design.  They were going for something whimsical and to me, it's very cold & a little too abstract for kiddos).  Unfortunately, I found myself there for a miscarriage and subsequent D&C, but it was great.

The new birthing rooms are HUGE.  The furniture is more comfortable, the tv actually works, I thought it was a fantastic improvement.

The downside is that with the new set up, they seem to be MUCH stricter on visitors.  This is only an observation, I don't know if it's true, as we didn't have visitors for this procedure but the lay-out is set up in a way that seems a little more restrictive.

I delivered my first at Hopkins and will again as well.  We had a very rough start and everyone there was absolutely amazing.  I'm surprised to hear that people had low opinions.  My OB is also with Hopkins.  I can't say enough good things about all phases there - from prenatal genetic counseling to a NICU stay, two infant surgeries, etc.  They were wonderful.

  • Im so glad to read your post Since I work for Hopkins and we have EHP they changed the way our insurance is set up and if we do not go with a Hopkins hospital we will pay 10% more If we go with Hopkins its covered 100%. So im leaning towards the main hospital even though I love franklin square. Any suggestion on doctors?

  • It is really nice to see good post about both Johns Hopkins Hospitals. It made me a little nervous when I was pregnant, because there was very little said about either hospital and the few reviews I did find did not have much to say (negative or positive). I gave birth at Johns Hopkins Bayview about a year and half ago and had a wonderful experience there. At that time they had also just recently redone their labor and delivery floor. I was very happy with my nurses and care throughout my whole stay. It is a teaching hospital so their were some residents and fellows in the room during delivery but I was ok with this as I work in the health care field and know how valuable that experience can be for them learning. I also had some prenatal care at the main hospital in the city and had a great experience with them as well. I would recommend either hospital from my experience and I definitely plan to have my next child their as well!
  • I recently delivered at JHH Bayview and I could not compliment all of the staff enough for their professionalism and warmth/patience throughout my delivery process.
