Old school V New school

So I was looking at M's toys. The majority of them are light up, electronic numbers that sing and talk and all that jazz.

And I decided I missed the old toys. The wind ups. The wood. The simple ones without all the bells and whistles.

I'm in a mission today to find some old school toys for M. Lead based paint and all (j/k). In today's world he will have forever to play with gadgets and light up stuff.

What do you prefer? New style or Old style toys?

I agree @lokilahve, I can't wait for LO to be able to play in a kitchen cabinet! I gave him a plastic spoon and cup the other day. He just chewed on them both. I'm ready for him to be banging on some pots and pans! :)

    Eta posted too soon
  • We have a mix but they are honestly more intersted in the less flashy toys. DD loves dolls, crayons and wooden blocks, DS just loves whatever DD has. His favorite thing is chewing on her barbie's feet.
  • We have a bunch of light up, noisey, obnoxious toys, but I am a bigger fan of the old style toy. I love all the wooden toys and good old fashioned toys like stacking boxes, ring posts and blocks.

The other thing I have just got LO into is heuristic play, which is using every day items to play with. I have made her a special box that has things in it like old scoops from boxes of Complan, a rubber spatula, measuring cups, silicone muffin tin liners, a silky scarf, a large stone (boiled) etc and she LOVES playing with this stuff. She spent an hour completely occupied with just this stuff the other day, after getting bored with all her normal toys.

  • I'm such an old school person. I prefer books vs. Kindle, cds vs mp3s and ipods, etc. We don't have many electronic toys, and i can't say it will stay that way forever but I will try to make sure there's less of them than there are the old school toys.

We have a mix. I don't want to have to replace batteries in every. Single. Toy. She has. I also can't wait until she's crawling and I can set her up with her own cabinet in the kitchen. I LOVED getting all the stacking bowls and wooden spoons out when I was little. Not everything had to glitter , light up, play music & blink. I think old school toys leave more opportunity for imagination.
    I completely agree with this.

  • We have a mix to. To be honest she loves to play with just her rattles. No noise, no flash. Some days though, she loves to be as noisy add possible. I try to give her variety. Never thought of the plastic spoons and cups. Gonna have to try that

  • Love old school toys especially if they're made of wood! LO also has an amazing book collection already; must be the teacher in me coming out.
LO does have some toys that are made of plastic and/or require batteries. All his new school toys have been gifts.
  • Like everyone else, we have a mix but both of my girls like the stuff from their play kitchen the best. LO plays with the play spatula and plastic tea set plate for a loooonnnngggg time.

  • I prefer the old school, wood, non-electronic kind of stuff. The less noisy and flashy the better. Unfortunately, the baby has his own preferences. He would like the noisest and flashiest toy to ever make noise and flash, please and thank you.
  • We have a mix. A lot will depend on what your LO likes as they get older. My big one is all about how things work, taking it apart and putting it back together, using tools, building, etc. so we have a fair amount of electronic toys bc that's what he gravitates towards. He knew where all the on/off switches were when he was really little.

Hell, I bought him a coin sorter the other day bc I knew he'd love it. I was right - hours of entertainment.

  • We have a mix but one of LOs favorites is an old school Happy Apple that my sister got us off eBay. They don't make them anymore (probably because they are hard and weigh a ton) but they are like the baby whisperer of toys. We used to have them at a child care I helped at and all the babies loved them.
  • We have a mix of toys that require batteries and ones that don't. LO plays with pretty much everything, so our batteries should last a while.

  • We are a mix. The kids and I prefer old school, montessori style stuff. Other people seem to love to gift the light up gadgets.

  • @kkay1982‌ what makes the happy apple such a great toy? What does it do?
adorable LO playing with it! :)

It just wobbles around and makes a little noise. Nothing crazy but he loves it.
  • @kkay1982‌ my mom still has a happy apple from when my sister and I were little!

  • We have a mix of both but DS prefers a water bottle to any so I'm not too concerned.

We got this as a hand me down from my mom. Pretty sure all the kids in my family used it. I have no idea when its from, but Jackson loves it.

eta: My mom repainted it when my niece and nephews used it.
