Multiples

PUPPP ?

Ok--so I have rashes all over my body. Though I am having blood tests done one Monday, my dr. and midwife are pretty sure it PUPPP.

My google research shows it is most common in first pregnancies, boys, and multiples, so I was doomed :-)

Someone please tell me that you have a magical solution to help out with this horrible itching!?

Any ideas?

Re: PUPPP ?

  • Hi! My wife just gave birth to our twins and had pupps the last couple weeks. It was AWFUL for her, but a couple things made it significantly better: triamcinelone (steroid cream) and Vistaril (similar to benedryl but worked better). I really hope you can find some relief! Oh, and hers went away within 24 hours of birth
My name is A, I am wife to J.  After 7 months of ttc and one MC, we are expecting two baby girls in 2014!

  • I had PUPPS with my twins three years ago. My liver was doing ok enough that they didn't do prescriptions, so I made it through the last three weeks by googling :) and figuring out the following:
    • Warm showers 2x/day (would start cold, then switch to very warm but still safe to stop itching)
    • Pine tar soap (smells like camping, but it works!  you can find it at Whole Foods)
    • After the shower, I would cover myself in Gold Bond cooling lotion.  Other people suggest Sarna, but the Gold Bond stuff worked best for me
    • All of that would make me cold, so I would immediately get dressed and bundle up!
    • Drink hot water with lemon (helps detox)
    • Lots of water
That gave me some relief.  My OB also suggested benedryl, but that did nothing for me. I ended up trying Claritin, and that did help. But of course, check with your OB first.

If you google, you will also find dandelion root supplements suggested.  I didn't feel comfortable with that, but it's an option.

  • I had awful, awful puppp. I took vistaril, cool oatmeal baths, and slathered myself in hydrocortisone cream. I would still scratch myself until I bled in my sleep.

It was also my first pregnancy, twins, and boys. Getting hot/ sweating made it way worse and so sometimes I would cover myself in aloe and stand in front of the fan. Seriously. It went away about a month PP, although I think I was in the minority- it's supposed to disappear quickly after delivery. Hope that helps... So sorry you're dealing with it!

  • Absolutely nothing helped, and I tried every remedy including a five day oral prednisone taper as a last resort. My poor body was a mess. The rash started fading within days of the delivery, but I still itched for quite some time.

  • No magical solution but a few things that helped. I used pine tar soap which I got from whole foods or you can order from amazon. Gold bonds cream that came in an orange pump bottle don't remember the name. A lot of cold showers! Eventually when I got really desperate I begged for a steroid cream.

  • Thank you all SO much for the help!

Ok--so I now have Gold Bond cream, ice packs, aloe, oatmeal, and benedryl spray. Up next will be pine tar soap and steroid creams.

This is really tough, and since I didn't even know it was a possibility, I think it threw me for a loop mentally too. I was up itching and in tears last night wondering how I could make it much longer like this. Now I feel like I am armed with some solutions to help, even if it still itches some. Muted itching is better than the extreme itching I was feeling.

I also appreciate the general support/sympathy. It is really terrible feeling to itch all the time!

  • Yes, I had it with my first pregnancy! Terrible!!! I was actually cracked open and bleeding right through my work slacks. I lived on Benadryl and sarna cream. It's sucks, but it doesn't last forever!
