UPDATE-
Thanks for all the responses.   You ladies were right - nothing to worry about right now.  No induction as of now.  Woo hoo! Baby is measuring at 24th percentile - 5lbs 15 oz.  So relieved!!!!  I was so nervous all day.  Will be 37 weeks tomorrow!!!!!!!!!  Crazy seeing all these L & D updates on here!
--------------------------------------

Hey,
Hope everyone is enjoying the last trimester.  I have not posted in months, but try to keep up on here!  Can't believe April is less than a month away!

So, I had an appt today and was measuring small again.  At my 33 week visit I measured 33cm, 35 weeks measured 33cm, and this week at 36wks measured 33.5cm.   Midwife has not been concerned saying there are many reasons this could happen and that at this stage it is possible that baby is lower and that is affecting fundal height measurement.  Since my weight gain is on the lower side - 23lbs, she is sending me in for a growth scan on Tuesday.  When I asked her what the outcomes would be, she said either everything is fine OR there can be low amniotic fluid or slow growth and then they may want to induce me.

The rational side of me understands that it is likely that everything is ok.  The pregnant hormonal side keeps tearing up and getting anxious that this baby (that may be small) may be coming next week.  Mind you, my first came at 36 weeks so I have been prepared for this all along, but I am so scared about what this means for baby.

The reason I am posting is to ask if any STM+ had experience with this in their previous pregnancy.  I am so scared to be induced too.  First came really fast and I was at the hospital for less than an hour when he was born.  I've searched the boards and found some stuff, but most are from earlier in pregnancy.

If you read this far, thanks for reading :)

Re: Measuring small at 36 weeks...anyone been through this in the past? UPDATE

  • I had a growth scan at 35 weeks because LO was measuring 32 cm and I hadn't been gaining weight in over a month. However, everything was fine and LO was in the 68 percentile according to the tech's estimate so nothing to worry about. And at my appointment this week I was measuring 35 cm at 36 weeks so back to "normal" size.

It's probably nothing to worry about and like you said if baby is low it will affect your measurements. For me the baby is engaged so that probably explains why my measurements suddenly decreased.

Good luck and keep us updated!

  • With DS1, I was measuring behind towards the end. I can't remember how much, but enough that we discussed it. The OB wasn't concerned and just said the baby would probably be small, which makes sense because I'm small. Well, he turned out to be 8 and a half pounds at birth, right at his due date. Not small.

Of course, get the growth scan and trust the judgement of your midwife, but know that these end-of-pregnancy size measurements can vary a lot. Good luck!
  • With my first my fundal height never measured past 35 weeks and she was born at a healthy 7lbs.

  • I was measuring small for my last one towards the end too. I over googled and flipped myself out about it, but I just ended up being induced at 33 weeks and she was very healthy and all was fine. You're at 36, so if it is a situation like mine you will be absolutely OK. Even if it's not low fluid and your baby is measuring small it still means nothing. I spent my entire childhood in the fifth percentile and other than being picked on a little, I turned out awesome. Your baby will be fine. That's all worse case scenarios, she might be totally right about the measurements.

  • My friend measured small her entire third tri and we all thought her baby was going to be a peanut. Well she just had her via csection on her due date bc she was breech and she was a healthy 7 lbs 1 oz. I think most likely everything is fine. Good luck with the growth scan!

  • ((Hugs)). I'm a FTM, but I've measured small (by at least 2 weeks) my entire pregnancy and we just had a growth scan a couple of days ago to check on baby's size and position, he/she is measuring 2 weeks ahead so it's quite possible that baby could be tucked into your pelvis/ribs like mine is, or like your mw said, lower fluid levels, etc. try not to stress yet. My family tends to have small bellies and giant babies, everyone has been estimated to birth 5-7 pounders based on belly size and not a one has been under 9lbs!

There is no foolproof way of measuring babies and no 2 bellies are the same :)

  • No, you are the only one.
  • Thanks A14 ladies, for reading and taking the time to respond.  Hearing back from real pregnant woman for some reason is reassuring.  I will be back to update on Tuesday, and hopefully not with an induction date!!!!
