Thoughts and Prayers Needed--Also, does anyone have a good fundraiser idea?

Last week my very good friends found out that their 3-week old daughter has an enlarged heart and needs a transplant. Needless to say, it's been a terrible week for them. No parent should ever have to go through this and we have all been beside ourselves with grief.

Thankfully, another good friend has set up a FundRazr account to help cover the cost. If we can't spare them the heartache we can at least try to avoid financial ruin for this young family. My sister and I are thinking of making something and selling it as a way to make a really nice contribution to the fund. We were talking about doing tamales at $20/dozen but tamales are crazy labor intensive and I'm starting to worry that we may not make a great profit on them even if we do buy the supplies at a lower-than-retail cost. Does anyone have a successful fundraiser idea? Ideally, we'd like to generate $1000 in donations/sales before Mother's Day.

If you are interested in learning more about my friends and their beautiful baby, Juniper, I'm including this link to the Facebook community page that was set up for her. If you have a moment please add baby Juniper to your prayers and meditations.

Check out large restaurant chains and ask them about hosting a fundraising event.   Before having my son I worked for a not for profit agency and I was on the fundraising committee.  You choose a day (usually mid week) and they'll generate a flyer that you can e-mail to everyone you know and if they bring it in with them and eat at the restaurant that day they'll donate a portion of the customer's meals that presented flyers to your cause.  We did Chili's and TGIFridays and I think Chili's was better because they also included the beverages in the total fundraising amount though I may have mixed the two restaurants up. Definitely ask if beverages are included in the amount.

  • Sell car magnet ribbons, t-shirts, find friendly business willing to raffle a service...photogs, craftspeople. Walk-a-thon, Zumba night at a local gym. Kids Dance party in her honor at a local school with 5$ cover and a local DJ donating services. Coin drive of all neighbors, mothers group etc. The young and the brave foundation.

  • An old coworker of mine has ovarian cancer. There have been a few fundraiser a for her.

The first was a beef and beer. A local VFW donated the space for free. Her friends made enough money from that to not only help her out, but also set up another series of fundraisers. Most recently they did Coach Bingo. They bought 10 Coach purses from the local Coach outlet. It was $30 for 10 games. You could also buy extra boards. There was also a Chinese Auction and a 50/50. From what I heard it was wildly successful.

  • Thoughts and prayers to Juniper and her family! I second the above ideas. In my neighborhood we "flock" houses with plastic lawn flamingoes to raise $ for a breast cancer charity. People pay to flock their neighbors for like $10 or you can put yourself on the "no flock list" for $30. Good luck with whatever you do.

  • If you have a good social group, do a yard sale. Hold it somewhere bigger that your home (church, VFW, community center) and collect donations for a month. It will over take your home while you collect, but some friends made $1400 this past spring.
