Pregnant after 35

Heartburn needs?

I anyone taking heartburn meds? I have been trying to get away with just tums. When I'm not pregnant i occasionally use Pepcid but I can't find one way or the other on the Internet if it's safe. I don't want to start on Zantac because I don't want to take an acid blocker and it's not effective for a couple of days. Anyone know what's safe?

  • I'm also not taking a daily/longer-acting med (have used prilosec in the past - several years ago when not pg - but even if it were OK to take it now which I don't know if it is don't want to) - mostly use tums or rolaids but sometimes take papaya enzymes (chewable) or a more complete digestive enzyme capsule.  That can help a lot too.

I take Omeprazole but I have been taking that for over two years. The OB said it was fine - but I have a long term stomach issue that I really must get sorted out one day. Acid inhibitors certainly take a while to kick in. Gaviscon and Rolaids are my back-up and Rolaids are far more effective than Tums for me.  I can feel the heartburn creeping up on me slowly as the days tick by and the tummy gets bigger. Oh joy.

Edited to say - acid blockers/inhibitors don't always work every day so always have a back up if you do decide to take Zantac. And avoid tomatoes or tomato anything - it's dreadful for causing heartburn.

  • I've taken Prilosec for several years, and stopped taking it when I got pregnant. I'm debating asking my OB if it's ok; so far my reflux has been bearable. Tums just give me Tums burps, and Zantac never worked for me.

  • I've had acid reflux since I was 12. I was taking Zantac (per my dr) but it stopped working. She put me on Protonix and I am so much happier! If it doesn't get better you may want to ask your dr !
  • When I was pregnant I had awful reflux that wouldn't go away. Tums just wouldn't touch it. My dr put me on Prilosec and I stayed on it for the duration of my pregnancy. Hope that helps those of you wondering if it's safe. Always ask your dr though to make sure there's not a reason you shouldn't take it.
