3rd Trimester

Experience with cervidil?

I am being induced on Sunday at 4pm. She is going to start with Cervidil since my cervix is still not ready. I have been 1/2 cm for over 2 weeks now, 50% effaced, and he's still -3 station. So NO progress what so ever :/ She said after the cervidil stays in, the next morning, after I shower/eat, they want to start low dose pitosin.  I have never had cervidil before, so I have no idea what to expect.  I'm REALLY hoping that the cervidil will just put me into labor.  If it doesn't, but I dilate, I'm hoping that I can just get my water broken instead of the pitosin.  With my last son, breaking my water was that push that I needed, but I'm not dilated enough to do anything right now. Needless to say, I'm a ball of nerves! What was your experience? Is it realistic for me to hope that after it ripens me, they can just break my water instead?? nervous nervous nervous!

Re: Experience with cervidil?

I was 1cm and 50% when I went in on at Friday night. they put the cervadil in and with in 4-5 hours I was dilated to a 3 and my water broke on its own. the doc came in the next morning started Pitocin and I had a baby by 10 am on Saturday! Good luck I hope it goes well for you!

I was like you. I wasn't close at 10 days over. Had 1 dose of cervadil at 8am and DD arrived at 6am the next day. Just took the one dose. I felt things happening all day and went to the hospital at 12am. Everything was great. Had double contractions but didn't need an epidural. Very happy with the outcome. Hopefully cervadil is all u need. Good luck.
  • Cervadil was the push I needed to get started. My water broke on its own about 15 hours after Cervadil and I labored without any other interventions for another 15 or so hours after. Pitocin wasn't administered till my labor stopped progressing but it only took a minimal dose to get things going again.

  • They did three days of cervidil for me before they were able to break my water.  Then they broke it the following morning and started me on Pitocin around lunchtime and I had her at suppertime.

They started inducing me in my 37th week though... so it may work better for you.

  • With my first, they did to me exactly what they plan to do to you when I was induced for high blood pressure five days past due date.  It didn't hurt going in, I got a great night's sleep, was given the pitocin and the epidural in the morning, didn't feel a thing until I started pushing at 4:30.  She was born at 5 pm.  I hope that my delivery this time is exactly like that.  I am guessing you are hoping for more natural, but I have no complaints.  There was not one second of chaos.  I thought everything went perfectly!

Cervadil was fine for me. It threw me into labor all on its own within about an hour of getting it. They took it out then, which was not the most comfortable experience once your in labor. I didn't need any pitocin or anything after that. It was 12 hrs from the time we arrived at the hospital to the time DD was in my arms.
    I was 40w3d btw.

  • Every birth I've attended that used Cervadil had minimal results. You could ask your practitioner to try a foley bulb. It will manually help your cervix along until there is enough room to break your water.

  • Cervadil was placed at 1 p.m. by a new nurse who had never done it before. That was pretty special. OB came in and repositioned it at 5. Still only 2 cm the following morning, so they started me on pitocin (I can't for the life of me remember what time or even ballpark, didn't write it down). It took several more hours to fully dialate. Didn't start pushing til 5 p.m. Went to c/s at 6 p.m.

  • I had two rounds of it before it started contractions, but it worked. Then I was able to stave off pitocin for about 8 hours and let my body work some. The cervadil wasn't painful but it did soften things up in there which hurt a little.
  • I had a stubborn cervix toward the end of my first pregnancy. My doctor sent me to triage for Prostin (same drug, different brand) twice, and I had a total of three doses. No change. I didn't even respond to Cytotec, Pitocin, or having my waters ruptured.

  • For me it felt like they put a tampon made of sand paper in my vadge. It only hurt during insertion though, once it was in, I didn't even know it was there. It was inserted at 9pm and contractions started in pretty quickly. The contractions made it impossible to sleep. When they took the cervadil out the following morning I was only at 1 or 2cm (I can't remember.) I decided to get an epidural. I was exhausted from not sleeping and knew I'd need my strength. After the epidural they inserted the bulb since the cervadil didn't do much for me. I went to 4cm quickly and my water broke soon after. I will ask for the bulb this time around if induction is needed again. Good luck to you!
