Crib straight to tall twin bed?

DS will be 2 in June, and we're due with our next LO in July. I have no intentions of taking DS out of his crib anytime soon. He sleeps great in it and has never tried to climb out. This means we're going to need another crib for the new baby. I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to get one that transitions to a toddler bed or not. We already have a twin sized day bed with trundle, so when that one is ready, I could technically transition it straight from the crib to the daybed. I'm just not sure if this is a great idea b/c it is rather tall. He or she would definitely have to climb up on something to get into the bed. I could always keep the trundle pulled out a few inches, but I'm not sure if that would be ideal. Any experiences with this?

Re: Crib straight to tall twin bed?

  • DS1 went straight from his crib into a twin bed.  His has a trundle under it so for the first week, we kept the trundle pulled out so if he rolled off he would hit the trundle mattress.  He had no problems whatsoever with rolling off the bed and after that first week, we put the trundle back under the bed and he was fine.  He was 3y2m when he moved to a twin bed.

Also, you can buy rails to slide under the mattress or put a pool noodle under the sheets of the twin mattress to act as a bumper to help train him not to roll out.

@JENandJEH - I'm not as much worried about him rolling out -- figured we'd get one of the rails like you mentioned. I just wonder if he'll have a hard time getting in and out of it for potty runs, etc b/c of the height of the bed. It's 26" to the top of the mattress.

  • You could get him a little stool to put next to the bed or leave the trundle pulled out so he can use that.  If you're not planning to move him for awhile, I wouldn't worry about how he is going to get in in and get out.  DS had no problems getting in and out of his bed.  The twin was in his room with the crib ever since he was a tiny baby and he started climbing up in the bed to "read" around 2.  DS2 has been able to get up on DS1's bed for awhile now and he just turned 2.

I wouldn't do anything special and see how he does when you do move him.  If you need to adapt to help him, then do it after you see if he can do it on his own.  Also, keep in mind that most kids don't night train at the same time that they day potty train.  It's a skill that usually comes much later for kids so it may be that he doesn't NEED to get in and out of the bed at night to go to the potty.  DS1 has never been one to get up in the night to use the bathroom and he hasn't had accidents.  Some kids, once they night train, are able to go all night without needing to get up.
  • Thanks! That makes me feel better about planning to use the daybed for #2 when the time comes.

  • If DS1 has problems settling into the day bed, consider making him a nest,

Toddler beds are convenient for teaching the skill of staying in a familiar bed. It basically isolates teaching that skill. Plus if they are used to snuggling into a small space like a crib, a bigger bed can feel foreign to them.

    Just an idea!

  • We put my 2 year old in a pretty high full sized bed straight from the crib.

She figured out how to climb that thing within a week and now thinks it's fun.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

  • For my sister and I our parents moved us from a crib right to a normal bed (twin for her, full for me).  Probably around age 2.
I know we both had issues with falling out (resolved with the side rails), but had no trouble sleeping and getting in and out of bed.
