Preemies

Feedings and scheduled

I'm new at this mom of a premie thing. My baby is 5 days old and was born at 35 weeks. I'm preparing myself for hearing we will be in the hospital for a while. We are waiting on baby to gain some weight. Currently, that's our only hold up and we are extremely thankful. How do some of you make schedules for being at the hospital during feedings etc. Especially if you are pumping or breast feeding?

Re: Feedings and scheduled

  • Find out when the doctors are making rounds and be there for that.  Otherwise, the nurses give you a clue when they will be feeding and you can try to  be there.  If you can't, don't worry.  Bring your milk and they will show you where to put it.  You can probably pump at the hospital.  Ask if they have a room to do this.

  • We are not feeding yet, just kangaroo care and I'm pumping 6-8 times a day for our twin boys. We love about 20 minutes away and our schedule while in not working as been:
    8-10:30 hospital for kangaroo
11- home (pump, eat, nap, pump)
1:30 back to hospital got touch time (just diapers, temp and cooing at them!)
3:30 home (pump, eat, nap, pump)
    7:30 hospital for kangaroo
    11- home (pump, eat, sleep)
    2 am - pump
6 am pump and begin again!

Been doing that for the 6 weeks I'm not working. It shall all change after Spring break when i go back to work and start feeding where I will go before and after work...

It's just a long time with not a lot if sleep! Good luck!!
  • Their feedings happened on a set schedule every 3 hours - their "care times." It was easy to know when i needed to be there for feeding because the schedule was so set. Our NICU was 100 miles from home, so I just stayed at the hospital and didn't go home until they were both released (6 weeks after I was initially admitted).
