Talk to me about RSV

I know there was a post about this earlier but I'm mobile and my search won't freaking work. My two year old had a cough and fever last week and guess who got it ? My seven week old..and it tested as RSV.
The pediatrician said watch for labored breathing and any worsening and I go back Monday morning. Any advice I am trying not to worry and I am freaking the efd out.
he coughs so much he lost his voice and his cry is a raspy awful sound:(

Re: Talk to me about RSV

  • watch him closely. watch how fast hes breathing, how hard hes working to breath, clear secretions. monitor his diaper output and skin color. its a virus that will eventually pass, but it can take a toll on the little ones since their airways are smaller. Also, it can seem better one day but then worse the next....

  • My lo had rsv at 15 days old. Watch for the labored breathing, skipped breathing, and turning blue around the mouth and keep them on an incline ( we used rep for everything including sleeping). Saline and suction nose. We were given a nebulizer to use to treat. And as pp said, watch for symptoms to worsen. It was a rough couple days and then it seemed to be getting better. We used the nebulizer for 10 days, but I saw a huge improvement after about Day 6 or so. My ds also was sick at the same time, and we kept the two of then apart (actually sent him to my inlaws for 4 days because he had bronchitis) I found sleeping on the couch with the rnp next to me and a light on helpful for sleeping. I hope your lo feels better soon!
  • Thanks guys! This is only day three of him feeling crappy, although right now he seems happy and awake, so thanks @bossyfnp for letting me know it could be yucky again tomorrow. I have been having him sleep in his bouncy vibrating chair thing right next to my bed so I can keep an ear out for him, and using the humidifier. Thanks for all your advice. Poor babies who get sick so early
  • Oh no! Sending hugs and prayers! Hope your LO feels better soon.
  • Can I ask how they tested for RSV? My 5 1/2 week old definitely has a cold, but the pedi said it sounded like labored breathing. I'm surprised he didn't test him...so I'm wondering.

We are doing the saline drops, steam showers and neubulizer.

I'm sorry about your little boy too! Why so many sick little babies?

My ped took a sample of LO's mucus and sent it off to be tested (luckily came back negative). I'm surprised yours didn't check for it, especially at such a young age. You may want to ask that he be tested. Hope your baby feels better!
