The heartburn. Ohhhhh the heartburn

It's ugly tonight. It's pretty bad every day but tonight my chest actually hurts. I took times but the chest pain hasn't gone away. I haven't eaten anything since 6. I'm trying all the tricks. Sitting up, tums, the works. But my chest hurts!!! Anything else I can try? P.s it doesn't matter when I eat, or what I eat anymore.

I've had daily heartburn so bad it actually causes my back muscles to spasm and cramp up in response to the pain.

Zantac 150s have been my best friend for the last couple of weeks.  I started off just taking a half of one when I would have symptoms but now I've resorted to taking a whole one daily as a preventive measure in the afternoon.  I start getting heartburn from water around 2 or 3 pm every. single. day.  Even after I take one I still have symptoms sometimes, but it's not debilitating.

    Good luck!

  • Yes water does not help the situation but I try to catch up on the lack of intake I have throughout the day. And I thought I was just crazy but I also get back pain spasms! I've had this heartburn since about 20 weeks and it has gotten worse since 24 weeks. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm making H pick some up after work!

  • I've had horrible heartburn for 2 days straight. kept me up all night last night. I'm drinking a glass of cold milk currently, i have swallowed a few tums, and I sent SO out for mylanta. Mylanta has helped, but it only curbs it for a bit. Next step will probably be Zantac once I clear it with my OB tomorrow. I heard zantac works, and it's safe for pregnancy, but I'm being induced on Sunday, so I wanna get the all clear before I take anything like that. I heard that ginger ale may help as well.  Worth a try!

  • Thanks I already had some milk and no such luck. It helped in the beginning. Now it's not typical heart burn, it's actually causing chest and back pain. I'm going to try zantac next
I can't do this much longer. It's probably the worst thing I've had to deal with this late in pregnancy

  • Zantac worked at first, but then it wasn't enough....so my OB prescribed Nexium.  It's a proton-pump-inhibitor, so it works using a completely different mechanism than Zantac.   I've taken Nexium before for gastritis, and it's helped a lot.  Prilosec is the OTC version, so you could try that and see if it helps before asking for a prescription.

  • I have acid reflux and it only gets worse when i am pregnant but thankfully my prescription is safe to use while pregnant...watch out for the milk...milk actually makes my heartburn 10x worse:(  i would get some zantac asap!!!

Prilosec otc worked wonders for me. I don't use it every day, just when I need it though.
  • Thanks guys I'm going to take zantac until I talk to my doctor and see if I can get something better!

  • Ice cream is pretty good. We have something here called Gaviscon, which is amazing. It's a really thick liquid like pepto bismol, but white. It coats your throat and stops the acid coming up. I get the worst burning pain at the back of my throat, which stops me swallowing. A spoonful of Gaviscon and its gone. I don't know if you have something similar in the US, but anything in liquid form is great.

Not sure about the US but it is available in Canada. One of the ladies in my prenatal class swears by it too.

Ice cream works for me too, and I've been finding chocolate milk really helpful. Also smoothies with regular milk.

  • Pepcid always worked better than zantac for me, but its not instant relief :(

That sounds awesome. I made the mistake of burping early while in my hands and knees position (trying to relieve back pain) and got some vomit tasting acid to come back up... it it's starting to hurt to inhale deep. Really uncomfortable

My midwife gave me a prescription for a 750ml bottle of the max strength stuff, which was free. Best present ever!

  • I've suffered with heart burn my whole pregnancy. I try to not eat too late in the evening, if I do it usually hits me around midnight and I'm up taking tums or drinking milk. I soo know what you're going through
  • Pepcid always worked better than zantac for me, but its not instant relief :(

I'm also a big Pepcid user, the chewables usually work really quickly for me and last a long time.

  • I have acid reflux also and told my doctor from day one that I have no intention on suffering thru this pregnancy with heartburn and indigestion. The first time I had a bad case of it, she put me on a super strength dose of Prevacid. I've been on it ever since. It is literally a miracle drug. I have not had heart burn or nausea since I started it! Don't suffer, talk to your doctor!

Have you gotten the chest pains? They come on so strong. I've noticed it doesn't really matter what time of day I choose to eat. It always comes... and it doesn't matter what I eat :/. Ugh I can't stress how painful it has become. I just woke up from a nap and it's coming full force..

my husband got Zantac on his way to work and the pharmacist said if it doesn't work I can return it. So I will try that first and if no luck I'll try pepcid

  • I was just reading about this today and most of the home remedies point to ginger - so ginger ale. Good luck!!

  • Ugh, I feel your pain!  I too have been having the worst heartburn!  After it was so bad that I was projectile vomiting one night, I started taking Zantac.  I haven't puked from it since then, but it's still really really bad.  Although, I will say, the Zantac often helps.  I've been sleeping sitting up for weeks.    I don't have any suggestions other than that, because nothing I have tried has worked, but I just wanted to commiserate!

  • The zantac works but it says I can only take 2 in 24 hours which doesn't help me!

  • I've had horrible heartburn my entire pregnancy as well -- found out I wasn't taking the Zantac properly!! Ob said to take Zantac every morning and every night. It's purpose is for your body to create less acid in general. Then to take tums as needed. This routine has worked well for me for the past three weeks!

Ugh, I overdid it with the ginger in first tri. Now it makes my stomach turn. My desk drawer smells of ginger now, so I hate having to go in there.

yeah I'm taking it wrong... I take it whenever the heartburn comes or usually at night when I know I'm going to sleep. That's usually when it gets bad. But I've been suffering all day because I took my last one at 1 a.m so I can't take another for 24 hours.. And I'm all out of tums!

  • Haven't been able to cope without gaviscon as soon as my head hits the pillow boom it's there everytime I bend down it's there. Has me in tears some days!! A bottle of gaviscon literally never leaves my sight. Car, handbag, home, parents, in laws good job prescriptions are free otherwise I would definitely have shares right now. 2 more weeks of the burning then fingers crossed it will disappear :)
  • Gaviscon is available in the US, my mom has a bottle at home.  She swears by it, and I think I may have to try it.  I'm trying to avoid drugs and use natural remedies for my heartburn but the past 2 days have been really difficult.  I broke down and bought a bottle of Tums, and they seem to make it at least bearable.  Breakfast food like eggs and toast, and sushi seem to be the only things that don't give me heartburn any more...
  • I know this sounds backward but papaya enzymes ( I do the chewable ones from health food store) are a huge life saver for me. They help with digestion so your body can try to work better. The downside is if you take it with tums I find they cancel each other out. So my usual is to take 2 papaya after eatting and if I feel the heartburn a few hours later then I will go for tums/milk/ice cream.
  • I had it something terrible with DS1, and my Doctor okayed Rantidine (SP?) also known as zantac. This time when I started getting it, I propped myself up to sleep against a large body pillow and sometimes two more pillows on top of it. Doctor also recommended this and so far it doesn't wake me up often, nor does it seem to be as intense as with DS1. Though I did drink soda with him occasionally and have since sworn it off, as it gives me nasty heartburn even when I am not pregnant.

  • Mine was so bad,I was taking Pepcid and tums with little relief so finally got on a prescription from my ob & haven't had it since! Can't remember what it's called though but I recommend a prescription strength med!
  • I have had AWFUL heartburn and reflux for most of this pregnancy, which got worse in the third tri.  After going through all the non-medicinal options, my doc finally agreed to some OTCs and what has worked well for me is alternating Zantac with a Pepcid complete chewable (one of those in the a.m. and one in the p.m.)  Now that I am close to my due date (10 days!) and baby has dropped a little, it has gotten better and I don't need the drugs every day, but when I do, that's what helps.

Feel better, I know how terrible it is!!!

Do it! I know you've said you don't want to take drugs, but it's completely safe and not worth prolonging your discomfort over. All it does is coat your throat and form a sort of raft over your stomach contents to stop any sort of reflux. It stays in your stomach, so it's not like injecting something into your bloodstream. I really recommend it. I went from having 2-3 tums a day to having one spoonful of Gaviscon every few days.
