Pregnant after 35

Harmony21 test (due to genetic problem scare from quad screen and ultrasound)

Just wanted to give hope to any parents dealing with genetic scares.
I am 37 pregnant with my first child. I had a quad screen done and the results came out 1/238 chance of down syndrome and 01/32 chance of Trisomy 21.
We had to get further testing done at Magee hospital. Our genetic counselor asked if we wanted an Amino and I advised that if after the 2nd level ultrasound showed anything adnormal we would consider it.
We did the 2nd level ultrasound done with showed an EIF on babies heart. Well since our quad screen showed a high risk for genetic problems and now the one soft marker on ultrasound which upped our chance of down syndrome to 01/81. We wanted further testing just to be prepared for a baby with any problems. We decided to take the Harmony21 test. Later that day we went to baby doctor and he advised that my quad screen test was incorrectly done someone messed up on our due date and our ultrasound date which threw the results out of wack. well since we went through all the additional testing already we still wanted to make sure. It was a long 3 week wait (lab was backed up) But we actually got great news our baby girl is extremely healthy with no problems at all and the EIF (calcium) on the heart will go away before birth. Sorry for the long story just wanted to give you guys some hope. I know you will still worry but so many times the quad test is false positive.

  • Got my NT scan yesterday. Fluid behind the neck measured 5.3mm. We're scheduled for CVS Tuesday and I'm looking for any hope. I'm truly terrified and cannot stop crying, despite knowing this is totally out of our control. Thanks for sharing.
  • That's great news, mylittlemiracle2014!  For poster right about this...I'm so sorry you're going through this.  How far along are you?  I am wondering when they do an NT scan?  I had an ultrasound the other day at 8 weeks, but no one mentioned that...it must be too early.  Please remember that these tests can be off and there's always a margin of error.  Keep hoping and praying and I'll say prayers for you, too.  Keep us updated!

  • @stephljohnson I want to give you hope. My pregnancy with DS I received terrible NT results. Neck measurement wasnt good and then add in age and other factors and it was awful. I did 2nd part of screen and risk went down but not by much. I really didn't want amino or cvs so we opted to wait to 20 week level 2 sono. Sono came back perfect. We gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy. The wait from week 12 to week 20 was tough. I get how you feel.

I was offered Materniti21 with this pregnancy bc of my age. We are going to do it. But ironically genetic counselor told us today that my initial NT results show no high risk.....I'm within normal range. We are still going forward with Materniti21.

@mylittlemiracle2014 Glad all worked out for you!

I'm 39 years old and have one healthy 8 year old. In 2012, I miscarried at 12 weeks for unknown reasons. In 2013, during my 20 week ultrasound we learned that baby had died and had a high NT measurement (likely genetic issue). I am now pregnant again :) and had a dating u/s at 10 weeks. Again, the NT measurement was high (3.0 mm) and I nearly lost it. Luckily, I was offered the Maternity21 test and those came back all clear. I personally think the NT scan is crap and will be replaced by Maternity21/Harmony etc.
  • I will be thinking about you guys. Hope everything turns out ok. I know these test are here to prepare us but they can be so down right scary and worrisome for nothing as well.
  • Hang in there....... When you say Magee.... are you from the Pittsburgh area? I ask because I am also. Not going to Magee though. Live east of city. Anyway..... I had the MaterniT21 test done before they saw the EIF at 20 weeks. Because my MaterniT21 came back fine, they did not even worry about. The nurse in my practice said I think 20% of pregnancy can show that and most are fine. I did not even do the NT scan due to the mix in results. I went straight for the MaterniT21. Plus my insurance paid for it all since AMA. Hang in there!!!
