JOBS

Let's talk about all the jobs we've had...or the most interesting...or the best...or the worst.

For me, I started out in my Church nursery watching kids when I was 14, before I was even legally allowed to work. Then once I had a car, I did after school care at a Church school. I worked at a surf shop also. I got a job at Build A Bear that lasted about 3 days because I got into a car accident and had no car. Then during my senior year, I had early release for work and PT co-taught at the same school for 2's and 3's. Then when I graduated, I taught summer school at that school for elementary age kids. Then at some point I nannied for a few families and taught 2's and 4's at a different school. I worked at a used car lot as the office manager, doing titles and stuff. This whole time, starting at 19 I started doing events and promos (handing out free samples and stuff). Then I worked at my exbf's (James) brothers airport parking biz as their corporate accounts manager. I worked at an upscale bridal boutique (loved it) and opened my own wedding and event planning business (also loved) and did that for a few years. In between I got a job as the tour manager for Choice Hotels on the LPGA tour. Moved to DC and nannied. Got married and moved to TX and nannied. Moved to NC and nannied then worked at a marketing company as a scheduling coordinator, staffing people for promos. I took this job to FL and worked from home for a bit while living with exbf (James) and then kept doing promos when that ended. Moved back to DC about two years ago, doing promos, managing tours, worked at World Market and got a job at a military non profit for a year. Oh and years ago I got a job at a law firm and quit after a few days. Hopefully not a sign of things to come since I'm majoring in Paralegal.

Best job hands down is the tour manager/brand ambassador stuff. The money is INSANE and it is so much fun. I've worked for every brand you can think of...Disney, Ragu, Nike, Adidas, Samsung, CereVe, Snickers, Coca Cola, Quaker, Mattel...the list goes on and on and on. I miss it so much and get offers to do it still all the time but can't with LO. I'm hoping when I go to FL I can book a few things and leave her with friends/family. The money would certainly help.

Worst job...I nannied for a family with two kids...one like two and one like 4 months. The parents were both home 24/7 (crazy annoying) and the mom worked nights as a doctor and slept during the day while the dad was a chef who basically did nothing. I had to make the lunches, bathe the kids, do laundry, clean dishes, take older one to school, pick him up, the whole thing. I can understand the mom not doing anything bc she was sleeping but the dad was a shitbag. I mean...did NOTHING. They'd stack up dishes in the sink and leave them for me to do. Once something fell out of the fridge in a massive mess and I KNOW he heard it but did nothing while I had both kids. It was just the end for me. I gave them some BS excuse and quit. I also nannied for another family with two kids who had a nanny cam and it was moveable so the dad would freaking move it and watch me at all times. They had rules that the baby could never be put down except to sleep and I had to engage the 2 year old constantly. My last straw, I sat on the kitchen floor where the camera could not see me and had a mental breakdown. I couldn't take it anymore and quit.

Re: JOBS

  • I pumped gas at my in-laws gas station for a bunch of snooty rich entitled people. Hands down, worst job ever. So much verbal abuse (and sexism!)

Second worst job was my last one at an online marketing agency. We were grossly understaffed and underpaid and IMO there was a whole lot of shady dealings going on. One being that I reported a colleague for bribery and harassment and they literally did nothing about it except tell me to keep quiet about it. Since I left a few months ago, almost everyone I worked with has jumped ship, or is actively trying to. It's sad, the client list I had was very, very impressive (not naming names as to avoid any nondisclosure issues since I just left a few months ago, but most people have at least 1 product from the company in their house at any given time) and it would have been a great resume builder, but they really screwed a bunch of us.

    Other random jobs I've had
    - I worked retail for 6 years, including management level
    - I worked at a company that did wholesale poster sales to record shops (back when record/CD shops were a "thing")
    - I worked in a call center doing tech support for Sprint's local telephone and DSL service. (This was probably my 3rd worst job)

Best job is my current one. I came back to the company I worked for for 10 years and I work on their digital marketing team. I love it. SO much.

WOW @ the gas pumping. That's pretty crazy. I can only imagine. I worked at a marketing agency where it was the same. We had to be on call 24/7 literally, were treated like garbage, while the agency made a TON of money from high profile clients. Turnover was crazy high.

  • Best job, hands down, Dairy Queen. Best 6 years of my life. Worst job, worked at a trucking company for 3 years in the billing dept., 3wks out of the month I had almost nothing to do. The 4th week I had to work almost double time. It sucked.

What made Dairy Queen so awesome @roxalot? I LOVED working at World Market 2012/2013. I made shit money but it was SO MUCH FUN. My coworkers were awesome and all of my assistant managers and team leads were freaking awesome. When a rowdy customer would come in and give me shit, they'd always back me when the customer left the store. It was great. I'd love to go back again but IDK if the same manager is still there bc he was a douche canoe and I couldn't live off of $10/hr.

  • We had a good crew, everyone was chill, I was an assistant manager and the owners were awesome. I made $12/hr when I left (I left because I didn't want to be an asst. manager forever but I also didn't want to go to DQ management school). I also worked with my brother, the one who moved to Japan. In the winter, it was so slow that we made up games like spatula football. We were hard working too. The owners would pull overnight shifts once or twice a month to give the store an insane cleaning. We literally scrubbed the grout in the tile flooring with toothbrushes.

Wow! I love it. I had no idea DQ had management school. INTENSE!

  • In middle/high school I babysat, in particular for my special needs aunt. I made like 70 every 2 weeks which was a ton of money to a 7th grader!
In high school I worked at a sneaker store (one of the managers let us take stuff home so I had a ton of awesome gear). They had a kids department too so that was fun. Also worked at a dry cleaners. I was there so long that i was the only high school kid I knew that got a weeks paid vacation.
In college I worked as a hostess, in the campus bookstore, at a vet (off and on for many years), as a bartender for a college bar (best job ever, dressed like a hot momma and made tons of money), oh and substitute teacher.
After college I spent over 7 years working in sales at one of the top banks in the country. I worked my way up to manager and the company relocated me a few times. I had a great apartment, drove a brand new BMW, took lavish vacations and made a lot of money. Worst job ever though. I hated it but was good at it.
After that I started in higher education working in admissions and now I am at a community college working with veterans. I love my job now but it doesn't make much money. I'm hoping they will give me a full time gig so I can support my kids after the divorce.
I think I need to change my screen name ps.
  • Worst job. Mcdonalds hands down.

But i started baby sitting at 12, at 16 i worked as a file clerk, after high school i worked as a care giver then mcdonalds, then as a go go dancer

  • Best job:  I started working on an Arabian horse breeding farm around the corner from my house when I was 13.  We had horses at home and I showed my own Arabs until I moved out on my own.  I also barrel raced every weekend in the summer when I was a teen.  Anyway, by the time I was 16 I was the barn manager.  By the time I was 19 I was itching for something else so I quit and started selling cars.  That job sucked.  But the people who owned the farm were like my second family so I went back and forth a lot with them until I was about 22.  I lived with them for several years after I turned 17.

Worst job:  Probably working in the staffing industry placing temps and selling new accounts.  It wasn't really the job itself that was horrible at first.  The hours sucked because I had to be in the office at 5 a.m. and we rotated being on call so when you're on call you get calls in the middle of the night.  That's awesome when you have to be up at 3:30 every morning.  Also, working with day laborers was the pits.  After awhile it easy to develop a pretty bad attitude.  These people are usually the dregs of society who can't keep a job anywhere.
  • I did a lot of little jobs like little league concession stands, church nursery, mothers helper etc before I was legally allowed to work. I also assisted in baby ballet and tap classes during my middle school years, which was pretty awesome. I kinda miss that.

Worst job was at Cheddar's. I only lasted 2 weeks. Waiting tables is NMS. I was a cocktail waitress for awhile at a bar, and rocked that, but food is another story.

Second worst job was purchasing for a book distributor. They only gave 5 days for PTO/illness in the first year, and I was wayyy overworked for what I was paid. I was young, and just glad to have a "real" job (not a receptionist or something on the lowest rung of the ladder), and didn't realize my worth.

The best job is tied due to emotional/spiritual satisfacton vs. pay and benefits. I did inventory analysis/customer service for a book and magazine publisher that focused on organic farming. I LOVED THAT COMPANY SO MUCH. Not the greatest pay or benefits (honestly, I was barely scraping by), but I felt like I was working for the good guys, and it was amazing. My ex managed to screw that one up for me. The f*cker.

Then there's the job I have now. I've been having some issues with corporate lately, but the pay and benefits are better than some previous jobs. I'm still doing purchasing, but for a different industry. Way more "corporate", and I don't feel like I'm helping the world in any real capacity, so it's kind of soul-sucking.

My dream job would be something on the business side of a non-profit or a "good" for-profit company, with only part-time customer service type duties. It's just hard to find something that satisfies your soul and pays your bills at the same time.
