Feet! Kankles

I am 34 weeks now. I have had a touch of swollen ankles since week 25.  Yesterday, my ankles got REALLy swollen.  They tinkle and hurt when pressure is applied.  I can't wear tennis shoes or work shoes. Now, my flip flops and work sandles even feel too tight!  Any suggestions on how to help this annoying tingling and get the swelling down?

Re: Feet! Kankles

  • My feet have really swollen up ... so pudgy that none of my shoes fit. I was told that... a. this was part of the pregnancy deal & b. that drinking more water may actually help. Good luck I am 36 weeks so only a few more before I get my ankles back :)

  • Drink lots of water.  Keep your feet up as much as you can, and flex your toes, do ankle circles, and bend and straighten your knees a lot.

Have you tried wearing compression stockings, support hose, or anti-fatigue socks?  These helped me a lot.  Just make sure if you're wearing socks, they don't stop just behind your knee, because this can block the fluid too.

  • Yup, drink a LOT of water and keep your feet elevated, that helped my swelling go down.
  • Limit your sodium intake too along with increasing water. Rest your feet as much as possible. I come home, take my shoes and socks of immediately and put them up. They look normal in the morning and then the cycle repeats...

  • Ditto all of the advice the PPs gave.  Compression stockings help a lot.  I wear them on days I have to work and also days when I will be standing most of the day.  I just bought a few pairs of the knee highs at a drug store and they make a huge difference.  Drink a lot of H2O, and move your legs as much as possible.  Also try exercising, even if just for a little while, as often as you can.  Limit your salty foods.

I started getting some ankle swelling around 32 weeks or so and started doing all of these things and have only had minor swelling since.  I get on the ellyptical and/or the bike in our basement every morning.  If the weather ever clears after this horrible winter, I will start walking again.  Exercdise really seems to help with this symptom and a lot of others so I try to force myself to do it every day.

  • I'd go get your BP and urine checked.

Sudden swelling should be looked into.
