Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12 month=1 nap..who else

I know that every baby is different, but DD didn't transition to 1 nap till 18 months or so.  DS gives us a hard with nap number 2.  He sleeps from about 7-6:30 am.  He usually goes down for a morning nap around 9:30 and will sleep 1.5-2 hr and then again around 2:30 for 45 min or so (if he goes).  Last week I thought maybe we would do better with one nap so we held him off and put him down at 11 and he slept 2.5 hr. so I figure he's ready.  Just wondering how common this is at 12 months.  Thanks

Re: 12 month=1 nap..who else

  • I only have one toddler but at her DC when they move to the 1-2 year old room they switch to a scheduled nap for 2 hours after lunch and that's it. For a bit after she transitioned she took a power nap on the way home from DC but that didn't last long.

  • DD transitioned to 1 nap at 12 months.  It was beneficial to us because prior to that, her two naps were anywhere from 30-45 minutes each. When we went to 1 nap, the time was a longer chunk of time - anywhere from an hour and half to three hours.

  • My DD was 13 mos when she transitioned to 1 nap.  She napped much better when we went to 1 nap.  I think it's on the early side but I don't think it's abnormal.
  • Mine switched at 13 months. In actuality she probably was ready at 12 months, but I didn't realize it.

  • There is a massive sleep regression at 12 months characterized primarily by resistance to sleep. Most experts seem to say that you should try for two naps until around 18 mo but I can totally see why some may try and drop naps during the regression; it took me two hours to get DD down for a 45 min nap yesterday!
  • It took my son the entire 6 months between 12 and 18 months to transition to one nap. It seemed like every day he varied in how tired he would be during morning naptime and whether he could actually fall asleep or not. Do your best to be a little flexible, and if he truly switches to one long nap for you, then consider that a blessing!!
  • We dropped to one nap around 11 or 12 months. It has made such a difference: two short naps where she fought sleep to one long nap that she goes down for easily.

  • Daycare does one nap after lunch starting in the 12-18 month room, so that's when he started.  On the weekends, he'd still take his morning nap until 13-14 months too.
