NBR: Who's been to Vegas?!

Well, we have officially booked our spring get-away to Vegas to celebrate my birthday and I guess you could call it our babymoon (even though I am not a fan)!! It's just DH and I going for 3 days in mid-April. While I know this is not the most ideal place for a pregnant woman, we both loved Vegas the first time and wanted to go back. We are staying at Vdara (which is smoke and casino free) and were trying to come up with things to do.

We will spend a little time here and there in casinos gambling, but typically don't gamble for longer than an hour or two in one sitting. So what would you all suggest for us to see and do? What is your favorite hidden spots and must sees. Anyone have shows they would recommend? And any thoughts on going to the old part of Vegas? Like the downtown area?

We have been to the Hoover damn and went to Zumanity last time we were in Vegas.

Thanks!!

Re: NBR: Who's been to Vegas?!

  • Oooh, I am looking forward to responses here.  We're going in a few weeks too.  I've been several times, but not in a very long time. so I can't give many good suggestions.

In regards to downtown Vegas, if you're looking for something to do one night, if I remember correctly, the light show was pretty neat.  I'm planning to do that on this trip.

DH has never been to LV, so I'm looking forward to taking him.  We'll be staying at Planet Hollywood.

  • Not too many ideas on what to do, but I wanted to tell you that we stayed at the vdara and it is really nice!  It is swanky!  Very modern rooms, very comfortable and clean.
I hope you get a nice view of the fountains from your room.  If not, ask for one.

  • I will beat you to Vegas by a week or so, we are going in the early part of April :)

Downtown/Old Vegas is a great place to just walk around. A lot of street performers and prime people watching, though be forewarned of drunken antics and shenanigans. You may also want to plan a day of shopping (both high end and cliche) and exploring the strip/casinos. It may be cheesy but its still fun to ride the gondolas in the venetian or go up the Eiffel tower in Paris or even see the pawn shop from Pawn Stars.

Personally I will be planning a little spa/pamper time while he gets some golf in. Shows are mainly to taste, but I loved Zumanity and shows like Penn and Teller or the othee crique shows are always a good times. I'd say go do as much or little as you feel like, enjoy some pampering or swimming (especially if its a novelty since you are currently living in the artic, formerly know as the Northern US) and cheese it up as a tourist as much as you want - its Vegas, no one judges.
  • I used to live in Vegas. I recommend a trip to Henderson for a tour of the Ethel M chocolate factory and cactus garden. I personally like downtown Vegas more then the strip, probably because of so many memories of childhood are associated with a number of the downtown casinos. But my favorite thing to do when I go back to Vegas now, is a picnic up on Mt. Charleston.
  • Oh I love Vegas, we even got married there...haha.

I really like the downtown area because you can find cheaper gambling and it isn't so busy like the strip and there is a lot to look at. We have only been to one show and it was KA, and it was kind of boring. I have always wanted to go to O, the water cirque show, because I heard it was awesome.

Margaritaville is one of our favorite places to go, but it might be more fun if you could drink. If you watch the show Pawn Stars, you could go look at their shop. We went and it was packed and hot but interesting because some of the people on the show were actually there.

    Have fun!
    hi

  • I love the freemont street experience (the light show place).  Every time I'm there I try to go.  The last time, was work but we had extra time so went to see the Bodies exhibit and Titanic at Luxor which was really awesome.  When I was there with DH, we did the dinner and show jousting thing at Excalibur and that was great fun.  Also, don't forget to be at bellagio when they're doing the water show, and check out the venetian, they also have shows and shops (saw Phantom of the Opera there).  If you like to see everything in the world, Stratosphere, take it to the top (I'm not sure whether roller coasters are allowed while pregnant, but that's also there), it's a 360 view of the city and surrounding desert.
  • Absinthe at Caesars and Le Reve at the Wynn are my two favorite shows. My husband was against going to a show, but still talks about Absinthe 2 years later.

The Chandelier bar at Cosmopolitan is beautiful and chill place to hang out. The bartenders specialize in crazy concoctions, so I am sure they could whip up an awesome alcohol free drink.

  • The spa at The Venetian is the greatest place in the world.  Worth the money for the spa experience.  They have multi sensory showers that combine lights, sounds, smells, water temperature and pressures for different climates (jungle, beach, tropics, etc.).  I've been all over the world, and this was the best spa hands down.

Other than that, I'm at a loss for what to do in Vegas besides get wasted at the pool.

  • This was a few years ago but my sister and I saw the Cirque de Solei "KA" show at MGM, it was amazing!

Thanks for the suggestions!! I am writing them all down and will go over them with DH. I am also glad to hear that Vdara was a good hotel. DH was nervous that there was no casino, but we were told there is an indoor path to Bellagio's casino. So I definitely plan on hitting up the spa or pool while he checks out Bellagio's poker room.

  • Mandalay Bay has the aquarium/shark reef, and I believe the Mirage has a zoo-ish type attraction. "O" at the Bellagio (Cirque du Soleil) is an amazing show and next on my list is La Reve. Shop/spa/pool/relax would be high on my list :). I was supposed to go for a week with DH, leaving on the 24th, but my doctor isn't letting me fly anymore :(. I am so sad!!! Was really looking forward to this trip but my health and the babies health are too priority. Oooh! Almost forgot....there is a store called Basin White that sells the most amazing bath bombs. I believe there are two locations in Vegas. I have only been to the two in Disney. But definitely go. They have the best bath products!! I am hoping DH will bring me some back because the selection online isn't as great as the store!!

  • Definitely Bellagio fountains and the Mandalay Bay aquariums were also cool. I like Planet Hollywood's casino floor and the Miracle Mile shops there. And the Venitian is cool to look around. And if you are a fan of AUTHENTIC pizza, you MUST go to Grimaldi's at Palazzo. MUST MUST MUST.

That's all, I won't bore you with all the sob-stories of my memories from 10+ trips there with stbxh. Like how he proposed at the Bellagio fountains...

    Ooooops, there I went...

  • I LOVE VEGAS!! KA and Le Reve are AMAZING, the spa at Mandalay or Bellagio, Must see the Conservatory inside Bellagio, Shark Reef at Mandalay, dolphins at The Mirage, Blue Man group (although I didn't like it much DH loved it), Buffet at Luxor is YUMMY for breakfast... I find gambling at Cosmo is much less smoke than any of the others. If u have the energy, Marquee's pool at Cosmo is fun and beautiful over the strip. Have fun!!
  • I went pregnant in December ! We had already booked the trip when we found out. It was a ton of fun. We went to see the cirque du Soleil KA which was phenomenal !! Spent time in the spa and ate a ton of delicious food! Agree with everything @chrinikki1 said! Breakfast at the Luxor is a must! You'll have a great time! We even enjoyed relax time at the hotel room!
  • So of course I think of food...I love the restaurant Strip Steak in Mandalay Bay, absolutely delicious and decadent. There is also a brunch place that is located in the Oriental that is called Hash House a-go-go that is out of this world. Amazing breakfasts and amazing bloody marys that you can ask for virgin. They come with all kinds of delicious edible garnishes, and I just love Bloody Marys :)

Britney should be up and running, not sure if you are a fan. My husband and I were considering a trip there and he said he would actually go to that, he had a huge crush on her in college. I actually considered it for a minute, haha! :) I heard she puts on a great show
  • I went to Vegas when I was pregnant with DS.  It is actually a great place to go when you are pregnant because there are places to eat and bathrooms everywhere.  Just make sure you brink comfortable walking shoes.

My favorite shows are La Reve, Love, and O.  Go eat breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi in Paris.  Yum!

  • Frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity's!
  • Oooh I forgot- Vdara... It is perfect for us preggers because it's not crowded or smoky. The cafe downstairs is YUMMY too. Their salads are phenomenal. The downside is getting to the strip... you have to either walk the ghetto side of the Cosmo parking garage, walk a long ass way through Bellagio or take the tram to Aria. That's my least favorite part but assuming you bring comfy shoes it's a non-issue. I chose Bellagio because I LOVE walking through the Conservatory (every time). The spa and pool at Vdara are decent too.

  • SHOWS!
We went for our honeymoon and saw Cirque du Soleil's KA show and Love show. Both were awesome! We saw Carrot Top's comedy show which was really funny. The Lion King musical was great, and we ended with the Blue Man Group which was my least favorite.
