Moms who pump and bf

So dd had her 2 month checkup today. She had only gained 1lb. Dr said up her intake so I am. My issue is not enough pumping time at work. I want to start pumping at night and bfing but how do you ladies do it? Pump between nursing sessions? Feed from 1side pump the other? I have plenty supply, just lack of time. We want to avoid formula for cost reasons. I'll take any suggestions you super pumping ladies have!!

  • We have a weigh in on April 14 to recheck weight.

  • I don't pump at night but in the morning I feed her one side and pump the other. It's when my supply is highest so I get about double what I do from that side the rest of the day pumping.

  • I only pump once per day to get a bit of a stash going, but I pump after his longest sleep (usually around 2-3am). I feed one side then pump the other afterward. Sucks staying up any longer than necessary, but I get 4-5oz in 20-30 mins, so it's worth it!

  • I pump 2x at work from both sides. Each session I get 5-8oz altogether. She just needs more while I'm gone. I ebf when I'm home so mAybe if I do like you say and pump in the mornings that will be enough. I just want her to gain. Her height was fine, but she is flatlining on weight growth. Gah. The hard thing was I ebf and we never did a feeding weigh in to see how much she ate so I didn't know how much to put in bottles.

  • How long does your LO sleep? You could try pumping a few hours after she goes to bed if she does a nice long stretch to start the night. I did that when I worked with #1 and also the first morning feeding when my breasts were really full I'd let him eat as much as he wanted then pump both sides, generally got a lot at that session. It's really hard to get excess without taking away from your baby until they start sleeping longer stretches.

Even if you do have to supplement with formula it wouldn't be much and a can would last you a while, I would think.

  • I pump both sides after her morning feed at 6am. Then I also pump at night after her last feed before I go to bed. I'm not back at work yet but when I am I will pump 3x a day during work in addition to the schedule above and nursing the others.

  • 1lb since when? And if they are waiting over a month for a re-weigh are they even worried? I'm confused.

but, for what you asked. I pump around 10am, though I've also done 7a when she had a good sleep. I double pump and just feed off whichever would be next whenever she's hungry next. Some days she feeds before and after and my boobs ache, some days she naps and the boobs have more time to refill

Today was her 2mo. 1lb was since her month. And they wanted to do 4 weeks but the first appointment I could make with my dr was in 5wks. She isn't extremely worried but said if she isn't gaining enough by reweigh in we may have to do something different.

  • We started giving LO a bottle at her motn/early morning feeding early on and that helped build my stash. DH gives her a bottle of pumped milk and I pump like 8-10 oz at that time. When I thought I was going back to work right away I started pumping more after her morning feeding and I started producing more to store. But to keep my supply high I pretty much always try to pump when LO eats if I'm away from her. I guess easier said than done but I've mastered pumping and driving now!!
  • I bf her before bedtime on one side and empty the other side with the pump before going to sleep. She sleeps about 5 hours and then I bf her on one side. After she goes back down I empty the side she fed on and pump the other side... She will sleep another 3 hours or so and I will do the same bf & pump routine when she wakes up again. I'm still home, but have started pumping and giving her bottles more during the day to get used to it for when I return to work in 10 days. When I bf, I will usually pump the other side after she eats. When she bottle feeds I pump both sides every 2-3 hours. I get that time is the issue... I think I'm gonna struggle with pumping enough at work too. The extra pumping at night is easier if DH gets up and puts LO back down while I pump. Good luck!
  • I breast feed at night and formula feed during the day.... No pumping

Thanks but that's not what I asked...

To everyone else, thanks for the ideas. I have plenty supply so now I just have to pump. It seems like everyone suggests mornings so I will try that! I'm not too concerned. Lo is growing and eating. Her needs are changing a and I will adapt. :-)

  • I'm curious... What is her weight? Because 10-16 pumped oz sounds like plenty. How much does she eat while you're gone? BF babies gain differently than FF babies.

9lb 12oz. She was 7lb even when born and dropped to 6lb 8oz before we went home. @ 1 month she was 8lb 12oz. Her height and weight growth were apparently disproportionate.

She has been eating 3 bottles 3-3.5 oz. The last few days I had upped it to 3.5-4oz because she was getting hungry sooner. I thought I needed to maybe add an additional bottle then the dr said that too. I work from 7:45-4:15 at a school.

  • That sounds like my schedule exactly. I pump 3 times... Lunch, planning, right when the kids leave. I get 16oz a day and LO eats 12oz (3 4oz bottles). I also feed right before I leave and right when I get home from the breast (even if he's just eaten). If you want to add in another, you can pump in the car on the way too work.

Honestly, I'm not sure I see an issue. Is she happy? Have enough wets? I would also ask what chart your pedi is using. The WHO chart is best to measure breastfed babies.

This. I added a session after DD1 went to bed but before I went to bed when she started sleeping a long stretch, and that's how I built up my stash. You can also pump after feeding at any time. You won't get much at first, but you'll build up your supply and start getting more, and that way you don't have to worry about pumping between nursing sessions and the babe not getting enough at the next session.

Honestly she is a pee bucket. I was only worried because she seemed hungrier. Then the doctor got me worried with her concern. She seems to be a very healthy baby in all other aspects. Maybe if I increase her food just a little she will gain what she needs to. My sister and I were always in low percentiles on weight gain and were perfectly healthy.

  • From what you've said, I personally wouldn't be worried. Go to 4oz bottles and see what happens. :)

  • I have the same issue with pumping at work. There's only one point in the day where I have enough time to use the double electric pump. I bought one of those Medela manual pumps and have been able to squeeze in some quick 5-10 minute sessions in the restroom. I only get a few ounces, but that's almost a full feeding. It works much better than I thought it would!
  • I go back to work weds and plan to pump both sides 3x a day at work(or at least try to). I will also pump after lo eats in the am(6amish feeding) then nurse her before we go to daycare- I will nurse when she's with me - when I get home and the rest of the night and will probably pump once before I go to bed(if needed)
  • at night I pump for only  5 minutes after she eats that will give me about 4 ounces a night and then I pump in the morning which will give me another 2-4 ounces.  That seems to be good to build up suppyl
