Crazy Catholic with strong meat cravings

So, any advice from other Catholic ladies (or vegetarians for that matter) on good meals for Friday when I can't eat meat? I normally don't eat very much meat, but this pregnancy I have been craving it like crazy. Any good high protein solutions that might help quench my meat craving when I can't eat it? Beans are unfortunately out, because they cause me terrible gas pain.

  • I was gonna make a meat/penis joke but! I actually had this chicken-ish thing last night that was really good. It's a vegetarian thing that I accidentally picked up in the freezer aisle. It's got an Orange Chinese sauce. I recommend it.

Aw, send the penis jokes my way, but no sadly that is not the kind of meat craving I am having :-)

  • anything by gardein, quorn, or morning star farms... unless your overly concerned about soy? or i love to make zucchini lasagna and add "meatless" crumbles

or you could just make lasagna with pasta.

  • Fish?  The protein should help balance out the meat cravings and be filling?

I'll have to try that! I've tried the veggie burgers before but was unimpressed. I bet it would be just fine mixed in something like lasagna. Thanks for the recipe!

If you still want to, all power to you!  I usually try to as well.

I like a lot of the vegetarian recipes on skinnytaste.com

Really? Our bulletin says that we are exempt from fasting, but it didn't say exempt from abstaining from meat. I'm off to scour some Catholic websites. And thanks for the website to look into also :-)

  • If you are using the meatless stuff, there are sausages which work better for flavoring than the patties (I grew up vegetarian).  :)

Also, if you're not anti-soy, tofu opens a world of possibilities.

You guys are definitely right. We are exempt. I found it here and I trust the Bishops :-)

I think I will still try to abstain, but at least I know now that it isn't a must. This is only day 2 and I'm really struggling. This year I am adding more prayer to my life for lent.

  • I'm eating shrimp tonight.  Hopefully that will stem my meat craving a bit.
  • You're totally exempt. This is the third Lent in a row that I've been free! However, I made risotto cakes tonight. Seriously good. We also had clam chowder for lunch.
  • I have a kick butt marinade that I use for mushrooms and I grill them after. Yummy. It's got that meaty flavor so its all good! I always try to use mushrooms as a meat substitute so I don't go over board with everything.
  • Maybe try some dark leafy greens in case your anemic.

  • I'm Mormon, and we have Fast Sunday the first Sunday of every month. Being pregnant, I'm totally exempt from the fasting. Of course, it's not like an iron-clad rule that you MUST fast. I admit that I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to other religions and what they do.

This brand (gardein) best vegan chicken substitute I've found so far. I'm not Catholic but I eat vegetarian most days. I'm a meataholic so honestly if I'm craving meat I haven't found anything that satisfies that taste totally. But this is good.
