babywearing freakouts

DS2 is 9 weeks old and whenever I put him in the mei tai to get stuff done or play with DS1, he freaks out unless I nurse him immediately.  Even if I have just fed him.  Once I nurse him even just for a minute, he will settle in just fine and fall asleep usually.  But then if I try to untie and raise him up to a safe and more comfortable level on my chest, he wakes up and freaks out again.  Has anyone gone through this?  Any tips?  DS1 didn't really like to be worn but now I need to wear DS2 out of necessity.  Does it get better as LO gets older?  I feel like it's kind of like teasing him having him lie on my chest and be so close to my breasts but not have access to them.  I don't like having my boob out and wearing him at breast level constantly.  He can't seem to be calm and awake in the carrier, he will only be nursing or asleep.

  • Some babies do have trouble being in proximity to the boobs but not getting to nurse.  You could try a high back carry and see if that helps.

How long are you giving him to settle in before nursing?  It may take a while for him to learn that it's ok to just hang out in the MT.  Have you tried putting him in and then going for a walk or doing something like vacuuming?  And of course try when he has just eaten and is well rested some too.  If you are putting him in when he is ready for a nap, it's likely he is going to fuss…until he falls asleep.

  • I try to walk around with him for a couple of minutes but he just seems mad until I give in and nurse. I will try the back carry but I'm a little nervous to try. Ncbelle, I love your babywearing videos, that's how I learned to use the mei tai for ds2 and I think you were an April 2011 mom too!

  • I don't have any advice other than it can get better. My LO hated being worn that early in her life. Now that she is older she enjoys it much more. Good luck!

  • Are you comfortable using a pacifier? If he's full, he might just be tempted by the nearness of your breasts and the binkie may help him fall asleep or be calm without needing to nurse.

I second the pacifier suggestion. LO has only taken one a few times and each time has been while getting used to being worn.

  • I would also use a pacifier. My daughter was the same way so I rarely carried her until she was almost 3 months old because I started giving her the pacifier then. Even now she still gets a little upset if I put her in a carrier without her pacifier. I think it is the fact that she is so restricted (She loves to kick her feet until she falls asleep and she can't really do that in the carriers I have).

  • Consider, too, that some babies just don't like to be worn.
