Green poop

I've noticed a few greenish poops here and there since bf, however they have been consistently green for the last 24 hours. Before they were the normal yellow/seedy. The internet tells me this is either: a. Normal and/or b. due to lack of hind milk.... I let him nurse in each side until he stops and he nurses for about 10-20 minutes (usually). He's 3 weeks and seems to be going thru a growth spurt and nursing a lot. Thoughts?!

Re: Green poop

  • Are you drinking Gatorade? My LO had green poop for a while and her pedi said it's something in my Gatorade that causes the color change. She also said it was completely normal and should only truly be concerned if poop is red or black.

  • i wouldn't worry if your LO is nursing/acting normally.

as PP said, what i have always heard was black, white, or bloody stools are the only colors that warrant immediate attention by a doctor.

i remember my DS having occasional green, mucusy stools in his first few months, and our pediatrician said it was nothing to worry about. mucusy stools can be caused by swallowing a lot of drool.
  • Nope no Gatorade! Ha that's interesting tho. Just water, coffee, and cranberry/grape juice...nice to hear that your dr said it isn't alarming. Thanks for the reply!

Thank you @vvvvvfee! This is also reassuring. There are so many things to worry about! Ah
  • I try to pay attention to the baby and not the poops. My son ha on again off again green poops and he acted fine. So I didn't sweat it. I think we focus too much on poop.

  • Anything with Red Dye40 will make baby have green poop. For me, it was Gatorade but it could also be in the juice you're drinking. My LO had has lots of poop textures and shades of green. After calling the dr just about every day for 2 weeks I decided baby is fine! As pp said... Pay more attention to the baby vs the poopy :)
  • My daughter has had green poop on and off now for 3 weeks! I asked her dr. about it at her one month check up and he said it is from something I am consuming, but not to worry about it!
