Solids

I looked a few pages back and didn't see anything but please correct me if I missed a previous similar post...

DD has  been taking rice cereal once per day for a full week. It wasn't my first option for her first solid but we wanted to do it while DHs family was in town and a miscommunication left me scrambling at the grocery store. Good news is that she LOVES it - she was super ready and hasn't had a negative response. I give it to her after her late afternoon nap and either before or after I nurse her, within 1 hour.

As a FTM  who also EBF i'm not really sure how often you're supposed to intro a new food and i've read varying accounts when I google ... I was thinking about giving her (home made) zucchini next week for a full week and then trying a new veggie each week and not mixing. Is this the "correct" way to do it?

Any tips? Any sites you recommend I look at?

Thanks!

  • My pedi said that starting with homemade yellow veggies first is the best way to go as they are pretty palatable to babies. She said to introduce a new food every 3-4 days, keeping track of what you give so you can monitor for any reaction.

Have you looked into Baby Led Weaning? (BLW, as referenced a lot). There are a lot of posts on this board and you can click here for a good intro blog. I just got the BLW cookbook and it makes so much sense that you let baby do their own thing and give them food in normal forms.

Your ticker says you are 60 weeks pregnant, so by my sleep deprived math your LO is about 5 months old. BLW typically is recommended for babies that are 6 months, but there are a number of signs of readiness. Check it out, it's a pretty cool philosophy.

  • Bf first, then give solids
  • My pedi said to do the new food for 5 days
  • After 3 or 4 days for a new food I believe, and there is some literature indicating it may be best to try something new during the early hours of the day so that you can observe all day and take action if baby has a reaction.
  • My pediatrician said one new food a week. I have food allergies though, so I plan to stick to that
