You're given $100,000. What do you do with the money?

Pay off both of our student loans (About $50000 I think, maybe 60k), give a sizeable chunk to H's parents so that they can pay off something that's stressing them (I don't know what, but I want them to feel less pressure!), save enough that I can take a full-year off work + a month ahead of time to be with the Rockies. And the rest I think I would want to put aside to support us so that H. can focus on finishing her diss and staying home with us and the Rockies as much as she wants.

Professional and intense training for our dog so that our lives might be a bit easier and he might hear more words of praise than criticism.

College fund.

Home repairs.

Backyard redesign w/patio and deck and landscaping that is dog friendly and low maintenance.

Professional organization help at home.

God forbid, a small vacation?

I hate to say it, but $100k can go pretty quickly!

I think I would use $60k to pay down student loans (it wouldn't pay them off entirely, but it would take care of a nice chunk that is remaining). Then I would sock away $10k to extend my maternity leave, and then the other $30k would go into savings for a down payment for our next house.

As @JGY said, $100k goes fast. I would really need like $300-500k to do anything that would be remotely life changing even on a smaller scale. Which is sad, but it is reality.

With that said, I would happily accept the $100k and would love to be able to do the three things that I listed... especially funding a slightly longer maternity leave...

I completely agree that $100,000 although it's a fairly large lump sum it gets spent way too easily. I kind of like that it's just enough to try to cover needs and a little bit of a want

My student loans are hefty and while $100,000 would pay off a good chunk, I think I would use it otherwise. I would pay off both of our SUVs, pay off our house and then put a sizeable down payment on our neighbor's house and property so that we could have the full 2 acres of land.

Pay off Z's student loans, which is about $9,000

Use for down payment for next house - $30,000

College fund for kiddos (eventually want a second) - $40,000

Give some to Z's parents - $10,000

Use the rest for a little bit of fun - maybe some redecorating or elaborate vacation - $11,000

IVF or adoption! Whatever it takes! Then with what's left, pay off Sarah's student loans, buy our forever home, go back to school to get a graphic design career going. Music is my passion, but teaching in NC is makin me hate TEACHING music.

Of course put money aside for kids tuition too.

If any money is left I would take Sarah back to Punta Cana for a week and celebrate our anniversary where we tied the knot!

I think I would use it as a nice sizeable downpayment on our next house and then rent the one that we just bought out. It would enable us to move to where we want to live and use this property as another income. I'd probably also use some of it as a car downpayment and do a small vacation somewhere warm.

While you all might think us odd, J and I don't mix money! We just kinda never did - so honestly I have no idea if she has any debt, but if so, we'd pay that off. The rest I'd say we'd put into her coffeeshops!

Tough question.....

What I should do - put it toward my student loans. Combined we own a house. It's terrible

What I would do is invest it and probably pay off our house in Roatan.

What I'd like to do is pay of smaller debts (car payments, etc.) to free up cash flow and make our life more comfortable. Then put the rest (over $50,000) in savings so I'd feel more secure and then enjoy thinking about what we "could" do with that money. But not touch it - until my RE business was bringing in a steady income.

.....Now if only I had $100,000.......

Minivan for the Rockies--$25,000
Pay off @Manada's student loan (so we'd only have mine to worry about)--$25,000
Babymoon to Hawaii (not realistic it seems even if we could afford it since M says we can't get travel insurance to the states with a twin pregnancy--this could cause some non-Hawaii problems)---$6,000-8,000

Put $2500 into an account to fund 5 days-a-week dog walking for the first 6 months after childbirth.

Give my parents $10,000

Put the rest into savings to top-up and extend parental leave.

I'd want to put it toward the down payment on our next place. Our current place is too small for the two kids we plan to have (some of you might think it's too small for one kid - it's 510 sq ft), but it would make a killer rental property so we don't want to sell.

We'd pay off our debt and what's left will apply to my student loans. It wouldn't really put too much of a dent into the student loans, but it would be something!

OH, man, do I wish I had 100k! I would put a sizable down payment on a house, buy a new car, and pay off some debt. Oh and I would get all of my dental work taken care of so that I could have a pretty smile for once in my life!

N's college fund - $20,000
pay a good chunck of B's student loans - $20,000
put towards mortgage - $40,000
savings - $10,000
and then with the final $10,000 I'd like to take a trip to France with B and N

A huge chunk to the kids' college savings (which is scarce right now!), pay down some debt (though stopping the private school tuition bill each month is going to help that soon!), a trip to Disney (I've been dying to take the kids for years), and pay off the last teeny bit on my car so it was done (it'll be done in 4 months.)
