Repost from Working Moms: SIL as Nanny

I have been interviewing nannies, as I will be going back to work mid-April. I had a nanny before, when I only had one daughter, but now I have two and that nanny works for another family. The going rate in my area for two kids is between $13-$15. I was offering $15, because I like the nanny to follow a schedule each day, and perform light housekeeping.
Now, my husband's sister is laid off for 3 months while her place of work is being renovated. She could use some extra money, and I do trust her with my kids. If anything were to ever happen to my husband or myself, she is the one who would take over custody of my girls. I do have some concerns though. She has a 10-month old, who she would be bringing with her to my house. She has a very different parenting style than I do. I guess you could say I am rigid, but I like my girls to follow a routine and take naps when they are supposed to and what not, she is more of a go-with-the-flow, if he naps great, if he doesn't oh well, kind of attitude. However, I know if I asked her to follow the routines I have in place for the girls, she would, she would probably just be rolling her eyes as she did them
Also, I will not be asking her to do any housekeeping.
So my question is, what should I offer to pay her? She's bringing her son, and won't be doing any housekeeping. FYI my girls will be 3yo and 3 months at the time I go back to work. TIA!

Re: Repost from Working Moms: SIL as Nanny

  • Agreed, and IMO this is trickier when it's family, so having her throw out some numbers first might help avoid any issues.

I am also a little (ok, a lot) jealous that you found someone who it sounds like will be a great nanny!  I wish we were able to do this but it's just too expensive for 1 child, and the nanny share we originally had worked out fell thru when the other family had to move out of town for a job.
