Working Moms

How much would you pay?

DH is going to be having knee surgery (ACL reconstruction) and will need to go to physical therapy (I think everyday, not really sure of the details yet). He won't be able to drive for at least 6 weeks. His mom might be able to help some if he goes after she gets home from work (she's a teacher) and my mom can help occasionally. But I am thinking we may need to hire someone to drive him. It would basically entail picking him up at our house, driving him 10mins away, coming back like an hour later and driving him back home. I belong to a few moms groups so I don't think it will be hard to find someone. It would be perfect for a SAHM and they could even bring their kid along. I'm just not sure how much to pay for this. We live in a MCOLA. Any thoughts?

Re: How much would you pay?

  • Does the hospital or clinic offer any kind of shuttle service that can take him to/from appointments?  I'd feel weird about hiring someone just to drive him...not sure what I would pay though...probably $15-20 per appointment (whether she chose to stay there and wait or make two trips would be up to her).

  • i would say $15-20 per appt as well. we had someone do this for my grandfather when he had a bunch of drs appts..if they waited..we paid them per hour (one dr was 45 min away so couldnt go back and forth)...otherwise like $20 for the trip is sufficient.
  • I honestly don't know if the hospital offers any shuttle service, I will have to look into that. DH had surgery on his other knee back in high school and his mom drove him everywhere. We live really close to the hospital which is nice. I was also thinking like $20 per day.

  • You may also want to see what your state offers as far as mobility transportation.  My state transportation department offers a shuttle for those who can not take the bus, train, etc.. for medical reasons.  The cost I belive is simiular to a fare and they help people who can't walk etc.. get onto the shuttle.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I contacted the hospital and they gave me a phone number of someone who can help me get transportation through our county. She said that the process to get approved and on the list can take some time, so I'm glad I started now. I think it will be good to have a backup plan too.
