Baby seems like he's in pain while nursing

My LO is a month old and from day one, has loved to nurse. When he was first born he would nurse fine but I could hear him gulping the milk and air bubbles traveling down to his stomach (if that makes sense). The LC didn't seem concerned and said that he's just learning to nurse and should get better with time. Now when he tries to nurse-very eagerly-he takes a few sucks and then stiffens his body and almost seems to cry out in pain. I figured he was gassy so I've tried burping him many times throughout but it almost seems to be getting worse. When I feed him from a bottle he doesn't do this-but I like nursing him and don't want to rely on a bottle. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas? TIA!!

Re: Baby seems like he's in pain while nursing

  • That could be. I've noticed that when he pulls away-in order to tense up his body and cry-my milk is really coming out. But I figured that's just what let down was. I will def give that a shot. Thanks!

  • It could also be reflux, talk to your pediatrician and see if zantac or something similar would be appropriate.

  • Ok I'll ask. How would I know If it might be reflux?
  • I agree with all PP's have said.  I had the exact same problem and it was a combination of both oversupply / fast let down plus refux.  You can try various remedies for fast let down & oversupply.  I cut out dairy and ultimately put him on reflux after our 2 month pediatrician visit.  As he has grown, both problems have resolved & we are stopping the Zantac.
