Ameda Purely Yours

Has anyone used this pump? If so, what did you (or do you) think of it?

DH and I went to a breast feeding class last night and the lactation specialist had one to show us. She said it was a good one but that Medela is the best. Naturally I wanted the Medela. However, our insurance covers our pump at 100% and they are sending me the Ameda (I didn't get a choice).

Thanks for any input :)

Re: Ameda Purely Yours

  • I like it! I have been using it a couple of times a day for the last several months. I loved that it's very compact and a closed system. I haven't even had to change any of the parts (although maybe I should). It's good that you can control the speed and suction. Plus, if they send you the cooler bag with Ameda ice packs, they are awesome! They stay really cold all day. I had the Medela 6 years ago with my older son, so my view on that is dated, but I had a hard time with that pump which is why I opted for the Ameda this time. But most people love Medela.

  • I use the Ameda PY three times a day, five days a week. It does its job, nothing special.  As the pp said it's a closed system, which is nice when you go and clean everything.  I also use the cooler bag with ice packs and agree they stay really cold for a long time. I have had to replace the diaphragms and valves three times in 3 months, which is kind of annoying.  I also have to snap the top off sometimes because the diaphragm gets crunched up and looses suction. Mine was also free because of insurance so that was key for me.  Try it out and see what you think.  You can always buy a Medela if you just aren't happy with it.

  • My insurance would only cover the Ameda PY. After about 3 times using it, the motor quit working. It was under warranty for a year so I sent it back and they replaced it within a day. The same thing is now happening with he second pump: motor is malfunctioning. It loses its suction midway, and I have to turn it off and on several times to restart it. I haven't had time to call them again and send it back, and needed a pump ASAP for an upcoming event so I caved and bout a Medela PISA. I LOVE it so far. Have only used twice, but has been the best $250 I've spent on this baby. Seriously, if money were tight, I'd buy this over a crib (since my child won't sleep in her crib anyway).

  • Thanks ladies and @lbs2012 I will definitely grab a manual as well. Never thought of that :)
  • I do not like this pump. I don't use it very often, but it's not very effective for me.  When I finish pumping, I find I can hand express all this milk that wasn't coming out with the pump.  I know pumps don't get everything, but to me a pump is pointless if my hand is more effective.  I too got it for free.  I'm a SAHM so don't need the pump much, otherwise I would have bought another by now.

  • I've heard mixed reviews. Some women love it some hate it. I personally hated mine, and got a PISA and it was 1,000x better. Are you going to work and pump often or SAH and pump occasionally? If it's free through insurance It's worth a try, and hopefully you have a lot of luck w/ yours, but if you don't like it and you are planning on pumping at work I recommend a PISA.
I will be going back to work when LO is 7 months old so yes I will have to pump throughout the day.
