Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

chicken pox exposure....ugh

So, DS had a playdate with a neighbor girl on Friday afternoon. I just got a text from her mom that last night, she came down with the chicken pox. She wasn't vaccinated, but DS was, so I'm hoping we can slip by, but I'm just not sure...the pedi said to watch him for 10-14 days....I know it's not the end of the world, but please send a prayer that he doesn't get them. We've never experienced anything more than a cold/bronchitis, so I'm a little nervous about this......

  • I'm sure since your child is vaccinated he'll be fine. As for your friend. Does she just not vaccinate at all? I wouldn't be letting my kids play with hers if thats the case, but I have lots of people around me that are immuno compromised.

  • She does vaccinate, but from the sounds of it, she opted against that one or just didn't do that one.....we really don't get together much at all, so it figures the first time they play together in several, several months, this happens...ugh

  • Yeah, I think some people view the chicken pox vaccine like they do the flu shot. Which is irritating. Your kid will probably be fine though. If it's been a long enough time since his vaccine.

  • I wouldn't worry.  If your LO gets it, it will be very very weak.  Maybe a few spots.

  • You do realize when you gave your child the chicken pox vaccine that they too were capable of spreading it to others?  The chicken pox and MMR shot are the ONLY ones that contain live virus and therefore your child is contagious for a short period of time.  Also, did you have chicken pox as a child?  If so, you child has antibodies built into their system until they are @ 18 months old.  Its not full on protection but its definitely a shield.  Lastly, (not that you indicated this) just because your friend doesn't vaccinate it wouldn't prevent me from allowing my children to play with them.  Trust your vaccines.

This. A non-vaccinated child shouldn't be treated as if they have leprosy.

As I've stated before I do only because I have 2 very immuno compromised people around me. We have to be very careful.

  • GL I had shingles when DD was 3 months old and it took me over a week to figure out what caused the rash so she had been BFing right next to it for a week and managed to not catch chicken pox.
