Leg swelling!!!!

Hey ladies! I'm 19 weeks 4 days and came home from work tonight with horrible leg/ankle swelling like crazy. (And for my fellow nurses, we're talking +2 pitting) I've been elevating my feet since I got home and they're somewhat better but I guess I just didn't expect it to happen so soon!! Is anyone else experiencing this already??

Re: Leg swelling!!!!

  • I'm not. I did swell a lot with DD and was told to drink a ton of water and put my feet up whenever I could. I hope it gets better for you!

  • TED stockings, girl! Save your veins! :)
  • I had this with DS. Thigh high TEDs did the trick. Remember to put them on before getting out of bed for best result!
  • I did this last weekend while at Disneyland for 3 days. It was awful!! I've been trying to drink tons of water to keep it from happening again, since I work on my feet (8 hours a day). I never swelled with DD

  • Mine are horrible. I have lots and lots of swelling in everything. I saw my doctor yesterday and she said that for now she isnt going to worry about it because my BP is low. She recommended the usual things, drink lots and lots of water, foot/calve massage, and compression socks.

  • She said some women swell more than others.

  • My sister is a respites therapist working 12 hour shifts, which I'm guessing is about what you work, her legs and feet were swollen from about 20 weeks on with her pregnancy. She put her feet up every chance she got while working and drank lots and lots of water. My legs have started swelling, but not to pitting level yet, so I'll be stalking this thread for new ideas to help with the swelling.

  • Ugh I had terrible swelling last time. Not just my legs but my arms too. If you look really closely you can see the white stretch marks from where they swelled then went back down.

Drink tons of water, elevate as much and as high as comfortable. If it keeps happening/getting worse talk to your doctor about limiting your sodium intake.
  • My legs and feet haven't really been swelling but what about waking up in the middle of the night because you pointed your toes in your sleep (stretching your calves) and suddenly you have Charlie horses in your calves? It's happened a few times now and it totally sucks it only lasts until I reach down and rub them out but it's no fun to wake up to in the middle of the night 23 weeks today. Tia (:

  • Mine do after a long day at work. I just elevate them when I get home. You being a nurse, I imagine you are on your feet quite a bit more than me. Unfortunately, it will likely get worse, so I second the water, elevation, and maybe compression socks.

  • I'm gunna sausage my legs into some TEDs and see if that helps!!!! Thank you ladies!!! I know it's going to be an uphill battle from now til the end of July!! Haha
  • I haven't had any trouble with this LO, but I agree with PPs... compression is your BFF.  ;)  DD gave me lots of swelling and, like the bad patient most nurses are, I never wore the compression stockings.  It was miserable at the end.  :(

  • I am having horrible swelling!!! It was so severe and sudden last Friday that I actually went to the ER (in my defense though just a few weeks ago a friend of mine lost her baby at 23 weeks use to preeclampsia and then spent 3 days herself in the icu so I was probably a little nervous anyway) - ever since then it seems like my swelling isn't going to get much better. I have a normal ob appt tomorrow and I'm gonna get compression stockings and I'm hoping that helps
