Andaluz Water Birth?

Has anyone used the Andaluz birthing centers before?

We're hoping to have our first one later this summer and I would love to use a birthing center.  The Andaluz center in Portland would be a perfect location (and it looked really cute on my "drive by" during the Portland Triathlon).

Thanks!

Re: Andaluz Water Birth?

  • I haven't seen anyone on here who's delivered there, but maybe someone will turn up.  I know a woman who delivered there twice and raves about it.  I was going to suggest you search the Urban Mamas site because I've seen people talk about it on there.

I started at Alma birth center before we found out we were having twins.  It was a great experience for the short time we were there.

  • So I haven't personally known anyone that has gone there, however I have as an L&D nurse taken care of a few "failed" deliveries from there, shipped to us via ambulance, good outcomes in the end but it's because the midwives made them come to the hosptial before it got too late.  I can't say that I've heard the best about that facility but my best advice is to do your research.  There are some local hospitals and OB/GYN doc's willing to do a natural water birth in a hospital setting if that's what you're looking for.  Also keep in mind that almost all hospitals in the area are willing to entertain any birth plan providing both mom and baby are fine (examples: no IV, no constant monitoring, no drugs, no surgical vaginal delivery, etc.).
  • I'm not familiar, but if you only are interested in a water birth, OHSU does them.

  • I was planning on having a water birth with my first child (now 2 and a half). Luckily, I ended up being induced. I couldn't have a water birth and be induced at the same time. I still, unfortunatly, had a mid wife. I know many people are keen on water birthing and midwives, but my daughter almost died because she had the cord wrapped around her neck three times. She was born "blue," "floppy," and "not breathing" after three and half hours of pushing! I lost major amounts of blood and could have died too but I got a blood transfusion. I'm sure she wouldn't have made it if I had tried to give birth to her by water birth (especially somewhere that didn't have loads of doctors to rush in and save her life). One of my friends had a baby that died just after Thanksgiving because her cord was wrapped around her neck twice. And, neither of us were considered to have "at risk" pregnancies. It's just a warning. But, PLEASE be careful!
