Has anyone had a double breech vaginal twin birth?

I'm 37 weeks now with fraternal boys that are both breech. I've always been told if twin A is head down, then often twin B can be born breech. However, the closer I get to D-Day and my docs see everything I'm doing to try to get the babies to flip, I think they realise how much I want a 3rd natural birth vs a csection. Because now they are starting to talk about the possibility of doing a double breech birth - albeit with a referral to THE top breech birth OB in the country (who thankfully works out of a hospital only an hour away). I meet with him tomorrow, and have heard phenomenal things about him, so already have a lot of confidence in his skills.

Have any of you done this? If so, can you share your experience?

Re: Has anyone had a double breech vaginal twin birth?

  • I have never heard of it being done. Not that it couldn't I guess especially since you have birthed vaginally before but it's one of those 'do the risks out weigh the benefits' situations. I know you really don't want a section but a double breech seems highly unlikely.

My doc won't do double breech vaginally, only by csec, if baby A is head down then maybe.

  • My MFM, OB, midwives, and hospital have the lowest c/s rate in our state but they told me from the start that double breech was an automatic c/s. They said the risks to our health given my specific situation (double transverse, mo-dis, baby A smaller, etc) were much greater if I went into labor than potential risks from a c/s.

  • I wouldn't risk it but even if I wanted to my doctors wouldn't either.

  • After watching a double breech birth on YouTube yesterday, I would definitely forgo it! I thought they were going to hurt the babies and the mom must have been knocked out since she wasn't screaming her head off! Not trying to scare you, but if you haven't already seen the videos, you might want to check them out so you'll know what you're in for.

  • I would not risk it, but then the type of birth wasn't important to me. I just wanted to healthy babies. I have had a late loss and then got pregnant with momo girls 3 months later, so that was ALL that mattered to me. They could have split me head to toe and I would have said OK.

  • My ob won't do breech if both are, but she is willing to consider a vaginal birth if baby A behaves :)
  • My girls were both breech and delivered by c-section. I agree with the 'do the risks outweigh the benefits'.

  • It was never an option for me. I had delivered vaginally before, but with a breech baby a and a baby b that flipped every couple of weeks, vag was expressly off the table.

  • I am not sure how I feel about this. I would definitely want to hear what the specialist had to say.  Have you had fast labors in the past? You have some advantages on your side: you are not a first timer, babies are probably not huge and likely to get stuck, you are with a specialist. However, I have researched breech birth while preparing for an emergency delivery since I have fast labors and basically it said that once the legs are out you have 7 minutes to get baby out and then well, bad things can happen if it goes longer then that. An experienced practitioner, can make a huge difference and can handle this type of delivery very easily but it did scare me a bit thinking that we were under the clock. I would definitely go to the consultation and see what the specialist has to say.

  • Saw the specialist yesterday and am so glad I did! He didn't even bat an eyelash at me wanting to do this, and this is his specialty and the focus of his work. He has successfully done double breech before, and knows exactly the precautions that need to be taken etc. Everyone on his team has done this and been a part of it, so they all know how it should be done. One thing I was grateful to hear, is that he hasn't had to use forceps or any other instrument in 17 years...he is THE calmest doctor you will ever meet, and I think that leads to everyone being calm and letting it all happen naturally (albeit quickly and efficiently). He def said that the fact that I've had two other successfully (and quick!) vaginal births (one being 10lbs - and no drugs with that), makes him even more confident that *I* will do well. He explained his whole plan for the extracting baby B (has to be done within 20 mins). All in all, I have absolutely no hesitation in doing this..with him. Any other doc I would have opted for a csection. But this doc has made breech birth his life work, and has had great success. And for those that are skeptical, trust me, there's no way I would put my babies or I at risk in any way shape or form just to have a vaginal birth. If this doc wasn't around, I'd opt for a csection for sure. But I'm very blessed to have him so close. What is unfortunate is that so many doctors now don't have the experience with breech deliveries, which is why they opt for csections...and an inexperienced doctor is what leads to problems with breech deliveries. So this isn't something I would suggest people do with just any old doctor out there!
