  My hubby was there for 6 yrs and I was there for 3. We LOVED it!! It's a shock at first but awesome. Housing on Eielson is nice but we lived off base. We were able to save quite a bit each month. However, we paid $300 a month in heating fuel during cold months. Buy some good boots and a nice jacket! Having Auto start on your car is AMAZING up there. You'll also have to have your cars winterized and will have to plug up the heaters every night. Oh and sight see as much as possible! We drove down to Anchorage and Seward a few times... BEAUTIFUL!!!! I am happy for you and your family. Just writing this is making me miss AK pretty bad!! Enjoy it!

  Thank you so much for the info. We are most definitely looking forward to the move. We will probably be shocked at first but I know we will adapt and it will be amazing. I will have to post some pictures!

  I lived in North Pole and worked on Eielson AFB for five years and loved it! The Thai House in NP is so very good as is LuLu's Bagels in Fairbanks. Also, make sure to sign up for the Denali National Park road lottery, if you get picked you get a pass to drive your POV as far inside the park as you'd like for one weekend in September. I got to do it once and it was amazing! I think sign up is sometime in July and is done online.   I live on Eielson AFB right now, we will be here for 3 more years. Its a big change. Where are you coming from?

  Thanks everyone for the info!  We are coming from Tucson, AZ and can't wait to leave... it's entirely too hot!! Right now the hard part is finding a house but the good news is ours just sold here.  Fingers crossed for finding something soon.

  I'm here in Fairbanks now and really like it.  There is so much to do.  I came from Sierra Vista, AZ so the temps were at complete ends of the spectrum!  We've only been here for a month so I can't offer too much insight or helpful info but I can tell you that people here have been so friendly and if you look for it there is plenty for you to do!  I'm looking forward to the summer here as I've heard its beautiful!
