Thumbs down for daycare

So we're on day 3 of daycare and already looking for a new one. Lo has spent the majority of his time there in a crib or plain bouncer (no toys). It's not like I expected a daycare to provide the same experience that he was getting at home with me, but c'mon, he still needs some stimulation, motor skills development, etc. I'm so thankful they have a webcam so that we can stalk observe him and notice all of this.

The staff is obviously overwhelmed. They've been switching between rotating staff to help cover and just moving some of the babies to the older infant room for the day (they put them in the cribs of kids that are out) to keep the ratio down/legal. And the main "teacher" in his room has already expressed some frustration with the management to me.

To add to our frustration, this is one of the more expensive places in our area. When we were touring, it seemed like such a different place. I don't know if it was just because we were going to be FTPs and didn't really know what to look for or what. I do feel a little mislead because there seems to be a big disconnect between what they told us and what reality has been this week. At least they haven't asked us for a loan I guess.

So I'm leaving work in a few to tour another daycare. We may also look into doing a nanny share with a neighbor. I'm a little envious of those that have family members watching their LOs. I so wish that was an option for us.

For those with LOs in daycare, how did they react? S hasn't been sleeping very well the past couple of nights and has reverted back to waking up every 3 hours to eat. He also seems extra fussy. In all fairness, that could just be a growth spurt.

In summary.. going back to work is hard. It's also impacted my bumping. I feel so behind on the dramas and bannings and things.

  • @hercules03 The first day, he was held some when he first got there, but since then, the only interaction he seems to get is being held while fed and if you count the provider rocking his bouncer with her foot while she feeds another baby. As far as I've seen, he's not been given the opportunity for tummy time or any sort of mat/play time.

And it's not just with him. When I stopped by early to pick him up yesterday, there was a little girl scream crying, tears and all. But she couldn't be held because there was only one person in the room and she was feeding another baby. Seeing her like that almost had me in tears. Since this all seems to be a systemic problem, I'd rather just find another daycare or provider more in line with what our expectations are for his care.

Girly and bub do really well at their daycare. Everything is written down so we know their naps, how much/when they ate, some of the things they did during the day, diaper changes. The teacher and other helpers in their room are very helpful as well. When we first started going they both were a bit overtired for a couple of weeks as they weren't used to the noise yet.

I hope your daycare hunt goes well and you find something better!

Exactly this. G is only there two days a week, but from the webcam I can see that she's happy and taken care of. She's been more tired this week, but in fairness she's getting a whole lot more stimulation with all the people there than she does at home alone with me.

As pp said, I'd talk to the director before making a switch. They may be temporarily short of staff, its only been a couple of days and it doesn't sound like LO is in danger.

    Dead.

In seriousness though I'm sorry about this situation, sounds like it was really disappointing.  So sad about the little girl you mentioned, that would be so hard for me too.  I hope you find a better place that can provide better care & more interaction.
  • So there have been a few other, smaller issues that we've been unhappy with, but I didn't want to type out a novel. The biggest thing for us is the lack of toys/play/stimulation. Our daily sheets have really only been diapers, feedings and naps.

I just got back from touring a daycare I really wanted to check out when we were making this decision months ago, but never made it. I'm totally kicking myself now. They have a lower ratio (3:1), and smaller age groupings (e.g. 3-6 months are all in one room vs anywhere from 3-10+months like where we are now). The atmosphere and philosophy are so different and more aligned with what we are looking for. Unfortunately, we probably will not get him in there until new enrollment in the fall :(

We're going to keep looking for a short term solution. DH is a teacher, so we may be able to do something part time in a couple of months when he's off for the summer.

Lesson learned - do a tour in the middle of the day/afternoon and try to do it unscheduled if they allow.
