Are you playing music / something else during labor?

I'm interested in knowing if anybody here plans of having music playing during labor? I thought about it, but I'm more of a person who likes comedic relief when things seem tense. So I'm considering getting a playlist of my favorite comedic stand up shows or podcasts or something to help keep the mood light. I don't think I'll be able to keep it up long, but maybe it'll help up to a point to keep me laughing and focused on something else. But also...who knows. When I was suffering with endometriosis pain, I preferred total silence when things got rough. I might make a backup playlist of some softer music in case I need a more relaxed environment. What are you planning on doing or have done in the past? Did it help?
3 early losses in 2013, but so thankful that our first baby boy is due 3/29/14! <3

  • I found any kind of talking distracting, I had fully planned to listen to my Hypnobirthing Rainbow Relaxation CD, but couldn't stand it because the talking got on my nerves.  Instead I listened to Comfort Zone (also part of Hypno) had the music, but no talking.  I have a friend who watched Practical Magic almost her entire labor, so you never know what you will want/need.  I would come prepared with both!

  • Talking would have irritated me too. I quoted my affirmations over and over help keep me focused during contractions. I played liquid mind's lullaby album. It was really soothing and relaxing but not distracting.

Although according to Ina May laughing and distractions can help ease pain and progress labor. So it may be good to have both available.
  • I concentrate better when it's quiet, but I plan on having my hypnobabies tracks playing, as they've already shown me how relaxed they can make me.

  • I planned on playing music. I like nature sounds and had a soothing ocean soundtrack and a waterfall soundtrack. When I was in labor music/noise was the last think I wanted to hear. I wanted the room to be completely quiet and I wanted to focus on breathing. I even got annoyed when my H was texting and I was in transition. I told him if he did not stop I was going to smash his phone.

I put together playlists - one upbeat and one soothing - for my first labor, and honestly, I didn't even think about turning them on.  I had an intense and relatively quick labor, so I just relished in the silence.  Now, if my labor had been long, and my contractions further apart for longer, I could see how a comedy mix or songs would be helpful.  It doesn't hurt to put together a mix in case you want to use it.  You never know how you'll feel in the moment.
